TCU’s defense suffered a blow on Wednesday, as end Devonte Fields will miss the rest of the season with a foot injury.
Fields was the Big 12’s Defensive Freshman of the Year last season and was selected as the Associated Press Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.
In 13 games last year, Fields recorded 53 tackles, 18.5 tackles for a loss and 10 sacks.
However, Fields never got on track in 2013, as he was suspended for the first two games and only recorded four tackles (two for a loss) in his limited snaps.
Although Fields will be missed, TCU’s defense is still one of the best in the Big 12. The Horned Frogs rank fourth in the conference in total defense after five games and shouldn’t slip too far with Fields sidelined for the year.
Losing Devonte Fields for the year hurts. But let's be honest. TCU had been playing without him pretty much all season.— Jake Trotter (@Jake_Trotter) October 9, 2013

TCU quarterback Casey Pachall suffered an arm injury in the first half of Saturday’s game against SE Louisiana and won’t return to the game.
Pachall injured his non-throwing arm after starting 8 of 14 for 100 yards.
Backup Trevone Boykin has plenty of experience after taking over for Pachall last year and played extensively in the opener against LSU.
If Pachall is out for an extended amount of time, TCU’s offense will change slightly, as Pachall is clearly a better passer than Boykin. However, Boykin is the better runner and has improved as a passer since last year.
TCU has a short turnaround for Week 3, as they take on Texas Tech on Thursday night. After the game, coach Gary Patterson indicated Pachall would not play against the Red Raiders. However, it's uncertain how long the senior will be sidelined.

Senior Casey Pachall will start against Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday at Amon G. Carter Stadium, Horned Frogs coach Gary Patterson reiterated Sunday.
This comes after Pachall was pulled for sophomore Trevone Boykin early in the second half after throwing an interception. Boykin gave the Horned Frogs a spark, rallying TCU to within three points. His dual-threat abilities created problems for the LSU defense.
Despite indications from Saturday's game, head coach Gary Patterson says there is no quarterback controversy and Pachall will start week 2. However, expect Boykin to receive playing time this week.

TCU-LSU is one of Week 1’s most-anticipated matchups. The Horned Frogs get quarterback Casey Pachall back after a suspension ended his 2012 season in October, but defensive end Devonte Fields is out for the first two games.
Regardless of whether TCU wins the opener or not, its alternate uniforms should certainly steal the show.
These uniforms feature red accents, which are to highlight the blood that horned frogs can shoot from their eyes. Read here for more information on TCU’s alternate uniform.

The Big 12 is one of the toughest conferences to predict this preseason. No Big 12 team managed to crack Athlon's projected final top 15 for 2013, as Oklahoma State, Texas, TCU and Oklahoma all ranked between 16-20.
It’s not the biggest indicator when predicting success, but returning starters are an interesting trend to look at before the season starts.
With 17 returning starters, Texas has the most in the Big 12 for 2013. Will that be enough for the Longhorns to get back to a BCS bowl? It's now or never for Mack Brown, especially with the rest of the conference in transition.
