5 Things to Watch During MLB Winter Meetings

The pitching market has been on the front burner so far during the MLB Hot Stove season. David Price signed a seven-year, $217 million ($31 million AAV) deal to be the ace of the last-place Boston Red Sox, only to see his deal be one-upped by Zack Greinke’s six-year, $206 million ($34 million AAV) contract with the — surprise!

Chris Sale Joins Pedro Martinez in Strikeout Record Book

The White Sox ace has now struck out at least 10 batters in eight straight games.

White Sox lefty Chris Sale has become a member of a short list in the record books, joining Pedro Martinez as the only two pitchers to strike out 10+ batters in eight straight games. In a 2-1 win over the MLB-best Cardinals, Sale struck out 12 over eight innings, allowing just one run. However, very typical of his season, he ended up with a no decision, as the White Sox struggled to score.

Chris Sale Shuts Down Astros, Continues Dominant Streak

The White Sox lefty ace has been incredible recently, striking out batters at a ridiculous rate.

While Carlos Correa may have garnered some of the attention during the Astros-White Sox game, nobody forgot that Chris Sale was on the mound. Sale, who has progressed into one of the MLB’s top pitchers, has been on a roll recently, allowing only one run in his past 22.2 innings of work. Almost more impressively, he has recorded 10+ strikeouts in five of his past six starts, with a season-high 14 punch-outs yesterday. He went eight strong innings, allowing just one run over the game and lowering his season ERA to 3.04.

Chicago White Sox 2014 Preview

Rebuilding, reloading; two words Sox fans must accept this season.
After you lose 99 games, the first goal has to be .500 baseball, not contention. That is only realistic for this team if the starting pitching, led by Chris Sale, Jose Quintana and John Danks, performs like one of the best units in the AL.

Rebuild and restructure are words the Chicago White Sox have preferred to avoid for decades, primarily because that has not been the game plan. They were a Go For It franchise. Maybe these two words fit better for the Sox strategy for 2014 — overdue overhaul. The message was pretty clear long before the Sox finished with 99 defeats and went 26–50 inside the AL Central. General manager Rick Hahn moved briskly to shed payroll, dealing Jake Peavy and Alex Rios in July, and then got more determined to build a younger, more athletic team during the offseason.
