Iowa guard Gesell out 4-6 weeks with broken hand

Iowa City, IA (Sports Network) - Iowa men's basketball guard Mike Gesell is expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks of action due to a broken bone in his left hand.

The sophomore suffered the injury to his non-shooting hand on Thursday night during a summer league game. He averaged 8.7 points per game in 34 contests a season ago, missing four games because of a stress reaction in his right foot that also limited the 6-foot-2 guard in several other contests late in the season.

The injury puts into question Gesell's status for Iowa's six exhibition games scheduled to be played overseas in mid-August. His status for those contests will be determined following further evaluation at a later date.
