USAFA, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Tre' Coggins' free throw with 53 seconds remaining was the difference as the Air Force Falcons outlasted the Utah State Aggies, 73-72, in the Mountain West Conference opener for each team at Clune Arena.
Marek Olesinski and Max Yon each scored 21 points to pace Air Force (7-5, 1-0 MWC), which has won four of its last five. Coggins added 14 points and Kamryn Williams brought in 11 rebounds.
Preston Medlin scored 19 points and Spencer Butterfield added 16 for Utah Sate (10-3, 0-1), which had a five-game winning streak snapped. Jalen Moore chipped in 14 points off the bench and Kyle Davis recorded a double-double with 11 points and as many rebounds.
The Falcons led, 39-34 at the break after connecting on 56 percent from the floor in the first half, including 6-of-12 from beyond the arc. The Aggies shot at a 46.4 percent clip and hit 5-of-14 from 3-point range.
Air Force cooled off after the break, netting 45.5 percent from the field, while Utah State improved to an even 50 percent clip and outscored the Falcons, 15-0, from beyond the arc. However, Air Force was able to hold on by hitting 14-of-16 free throw attempts, including Coggins' game-winner.
The Falcons had a 30-26 advantage in rebounds. Utah State assisted on 21 of its 27 field goals.
