Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Bryn Forbes scored a game-high 22 points as the Cleveland State Vikings topped the Iona Gaels, 73-69, in non-conference play at the Wolstein Center.
Forbes converted all four of his attempts from 3-point range and also cleared six rebounds for the Vikings (1-0) in their season-opening victory. Anton Grady produced a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for CSU, followed by Trey Lewis and Jon Harris with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Gaels (0-1) were paced by David Laury who registered a double-double of his own with 19 points and 10 boards, while Sean Armand pitched in with 17 points and Tre Bowman 14 and five boards in the setback.
The Vikings struggled coming out of the gate, shooting a mere 29.5 percent from the floor and 2-of-10 beyond the arc, not to mention just 1-of-6 at the free-throw line as they fell behind at the half, 44-29.
After the break it was Iona that had trouble finding the basket as the visitors converted only 9-of-37 (.243), including 1-of-10 on the outside, as CSU bounced back and secured the home victory.
In a game that featured six ties and 12 lead changes, the Gaels hurt themselves with just 6-of-22 shooting out on the perimeter.
