Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Rakeem Buckles tallied a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds as well as five blocks as the FIU Panthers narrowly defeated the UAB Blazers, 78-73, in a Conference USA tilt at the U.S. Century Bank Arena.
Tymell Murphy added 16 points for the Panthers (12-11, 4-4 C-USA), who stopped a two-game skid. Dennis Mavin and Jerome Fink both scored in double figures with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Chad Frazier had 23 points and five assists for the Blazers (14-8, 3-5), as they lost their second straight. C.J. Washington chipped in 19 points as Fahro Alihodzic logged 10. Robert Williams cleared seven boards.
UAB made 43.8 percent of its first half field goal tries as it led 32-27 at the intermission. FIU connected on just 34.8 percent of its shots from the floor, had nine fewer field goal attempts, and turned the ball over nine times.
In a back-and-forth second period the Panthers drained 59.4 percent of their shots from the field. After tying the game up at 60 with 4:01 left, FIU went on a 9-2 run to create some room in the final minutes of the game.
Despite losing, the Blazers outscored the Panthers 36-30 in the paint.
