Piscataway, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Marcus Thornton scored a game-high 28 points as the William & Mary Tribe dismissed the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, 72-62, in non-conference play at the RAC.
Thornton, who pulled down six rebounds, made good on all but three of his 19 free-throw attempts for the Tribe (2-3). Terry Tarpey pitched in with 11 points and Tim Rusthoven tallied 10.
The Knights (3-3) were paced by Jerome Seagears with 15 points, followed by Myles Mack and Kadeem Jack with 14 points apiece, the latter also logging nine rebounds and four blocked shots.
Rutgers led by as many as 12 points late in the first half, the team shooting 46.2 percent from the field and 5-of-11 behind the 3-point line, en route to a 33-24 edge at the break. William & Mary made a total of just nine field goals through the first 20 minutes, 1-of-10 beyond the arc.
In the second half the roles reversed as the Tribe converted 58.3 percent from the field and outscored the hosts at the free-throw line, 16-4, on the way to the double-digit win.
The Tribe survived 15 turnovers as it outscored Rutgers at the charity stripe, 21-8.
