Sioux Falls, SD (SportsNetwork.com) - Brayden Carlson scored 13 points to lead four players in double figures for the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, as they defeated the Western Illinois Leathernecks 71-50 in the Summit League Tournament quarterfinals at Sioux Falls Arena.
Jordan Dykstra tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds for the third-seeded Jackrabbits (19-11), who will battle second-seed IUPU-Fort Wayne on Monday in the semifinals. Marcus Heemstra and Chad White chipped in 10 points apiece for the winning side.
Garrett Covington netted a game-high 14 points and Jabari Sandifer tacked on 13 for the sixth-seeded Leathernecks (10-20). Michael Ochereobia logged 10 points in the losing effort.
At the end of the first half South Dakota State only had a 26-23 lead. The Jackrabbits connected on 40 percent from the floor in the first frame, compared to a 45.8 percent showing from Western Illinois. However, South Dakota State had slight scoring advantages from beyond the arc (6-3) and at the free-throw line (4-0).
The second half was a different story, as the Jackrabbits improved to 45.8 percent shooting, knocked down 19-of-25 at the charity stripe and limited the Leathernecks to 29.6 percent from the floor.
South Dakota State had a 24-7 scoring advantage off of turnovers and won the battle of the boards 39-25.
