Troy, AL (SportsNetwork.com) - Hunter Williams finished with 26 points as the Troy Trojans won in a close one against the South Alabama Jaguars, 79-74, in a Sun Belt Conference contest at Trojan Arena.
Kevin Thomas scored 15 points for the Trojans (8-14, 3-7 Sun Belt), who snapped a five-game losing streak. Jeff Mullahey added 13 points as Josh Warren collected 10 boards.
Augustine Rubit logged 25 points for the Jaguars (7-16, 1-9), who extended their losing streak to five. Barrington Stevens and Ken Williams each tallied 13 points, while Mychal Ammons cleared eight boards.
South Alabama made 40.7 percent of its first half field goal attempts, including 6-of-14 from 3-point range, as it took a slim 31-30 lead into the break. Troy shot just 37.5 percent from the floor but converted 10-of-13 from the free-throw line.
In the second frame the Trojans connected on 53.3 percent of their field goal tries, including 7-of-11 from beyond the arc. Early in the period with Troy up by one, the Trojans went on an 11-1 run to create some breathing room that they would maintain until the end of the game.
Troy played better inside, outscoring the Jaguars 32-24 in the paint.
