Honolulu, HI (SportsNetwork.com) - Shayne Whittington posted a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Western Michigan Broncos to a 63-52 decision over the Tennessee State Tigers at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu as part of the annual Rainbow Classic.
David Brown tallied a team-high 17 points for WMU (2-1) while Connar Tava contributed 16 points and six rebounds. Austin Richie made 6-of-7 attempts at the free-throw line en route to 11 points.
Patrick Miller paced TSU (0-3) with 17 points on 6-of-24 shooting from the field. M.J. Rhett scored 10 points and pulled down nine rebounds as the Tigers lost their third consecutive game to begin the 2013-14 campaign.
WMU took a 31-21 lead into the intermission after knocking down 40 percent of its field goal attempts in the opening 20 minutes of action. The Tigers missed all 10 of their shots from beyond the arc in the first half.
TSU failed to rally back as it was limited to just 33.3 percent shooting from the floor after the break. The Broncos protected their lead by sinking 13- of-16 attempts at the charity stripe in the second half.
WMU outscored the Tigers, 34-20, in the paint and also held a 13-4 edge in second chance points.
