For some teams busy and edgy can work. For others, traditional and simple is the way to go. Auburn's uniforms have remained largely unchanged for what seems like their entire existence. The classic "AU" logo is perfectly simple and the color scheme isn't overwhelming. The blue home tops and white road tops mixed with tiger-striped white pants is an SEC stalwart.
The black and gold of Iowa is certainly different from the black and gold of Purdue, but both work extremely well. The classic look hasn't changed for the Hawkeyes in years and Kinnick Stadium looks amazing packed with matching fans. The yellow stands out extremely well against the all of the black and the the Hawkeye logo is one of the more unique and classic in all of college football. Just imagine how awesome a matte black helmet would look like with these?
The Badgers sport one of the more traditional two-tone color schemes in the nation. The floating "W" has been tweaked over the years but the simple red tops and white pants with red stripes have remained constant for at least two decades. The all-white road uniforms are slick as well — much like Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama or Penn State. But when Wisconsin added the red pants to the mix — generally reserved for huge games, say, in the Rose Bowl — these diddies were taken to a new level.
This uniform is very underrated. The black and gold is a great combination and makes this team very unique in the Pac-12, as no other team has a similar pattern. The black pants are awesome looking and the trim on the shoulders isn't audacious. Now, if only the football team could win some games.
It's fairly simple, fairly straight forward and lacks all of the bizarro trendy edginess of new-wave uniforms. The orange isn't the easiest on the eyes but the logo is one of college football's best and the simplicity of the orange works well. And the Tigers may claim the best alternate uniform in all of the nation — these purple diddies.
The color is gaudy for sure but what makes Tennessee's uniforms stylish are their simplicity. The two-tone white and orange combination has classically survived decades of uniform tweaks. No matter how many bad alternates crop up (like these ugly duds), the Vols always return to their simple home orange tops and traditional white pants (shown). With the addition of the new-er orange pants, this get-up has only gotten better.
It's impossible to rank Oregon. Here is a shot of their 2011 wardrobe produced by OregonLive.com. Some are awesome and extremely stylish: ones worn vs. Missouri State, Arizona, Colorado, Stanford and Wisconsin. Some are too much and way over the top: LSU, Nevada, Arizona State, USC and Washington State. And some aren't bad or good: Washington, Cal, Oregon State or UCLA. When they are good, few teams look as smooth and edgy as the Ducks. But when NIKE misses, it misses big.
The Cougars have added some small frills like extra stripes down the pants or the subtle collar trim. But they didn't go over the top and it didn't take anything away from one of the most iconic outfits in the college game. The "Y" logo is about as good as it gets nationally and the blue and white color scheme is one of the best.
17. Washington Huskies
Washington's purple and gold has long been a fan favorite from across the nation. And after the small tweaks and upgrades a few years ago, these have become some of the smoothest digs around. The purple pants and white tops are downright amazing while the traditional purple tops and gold pants are still some of the league's most stylish. The key was the Huskies didn't add too many frills when they updated the look.
Some don't like the black trim that has worked its way into the mix, but it is still hard to argue with the Buckeyes' classic look. The helmets are extremely simple but look great — especially, covered in Buckeye stickers. The classic scarlet and grey scheme won't ever go out of style. It isn't the best get-up in the Big Ten but they look pretty damn good.
There is no weakness to the Spartans uniform. The logo and helmet are clean, classic and stylish. The green and white two-tone scheme is fantastic (as long as gold or black isn't added to the mix). And the green trim on the pants is just enough to be edgy for the young fans and traditional for the older ones. This is one of the most underrated uniforms in the nation.
Few outfits are as classically popular as the garnet and gold of Florida State. This uniform has remained completely unchanged for what feels like decades and the look likely won't be messed with any time soon. The spear on the helmet is classic. The 'Nole logo on the plain gold pants is a nice touch. And the garnet or white tops both look fantastic on Saturdays.
It's plain and fairly simple but Georgia shouldn't be messing with a good thing. The bizarro alternates used against Boise State two years ago aside, most every UGA outfit has been strong. The black and red stripes on the pants add the perfect amount of color and the ordinary and classic tops and helmets have worked for decades. And when it comes to black alternates, a team with black in its primary color scheme can always pull it off better than those who have to force it (looking at you Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky, Texas A&M and Mississippi State).
When the Hokies added the orange and maroon shoulder pad stripes, this uniform became one of the nation's best. The home purples are excellent but the road whites are simply awesome. There is a perfect blend of modern edge and classic traditional style to Virgina Tech's newest uniform. And it makes it the ACC's best — despite the odd combination of colors.
It's about as classic as a uniform can possibly be. Hell, even the team mascot is named after what the team looked like on the field way back when. The plain numbered helmets are fan favorites and the clean two-tone look will never go out of style. Programs like Texas, Oklahoma, Penn State and Alabama should never change their simple, classic and traditional style.
The old Aggies digs were solid and few tradition-laden programs should ever change their classic style. But the Texas A&M uniform update from last year was extremely well received. The bevelled numbers, simple contrasting shoulder and pant stripes, and matte helmets look awesome. It is a risky proposition to update a classic style and few do it well, but the Ags hit a home run with their redesign.
There is no doubt who the top two uniforms in the Big 12 are: Oklahoma and Texas. The two football powerhouses' attires are steeped in clean, classic, plain tradition. The Crimson and the Cream are a perfect example of an old-school uniform with no frills, quirky piping or silly helmets. Some teams should never go down the Oregon/Maryland path of dressing and the Sooners are one of them.
It doesn't get much more traditional and stylish all at once than the USC Trojans. These uniforms have figured out a way to be edgy and fresh as well as classic and clean all at the same time. No easy feat. The road whites look just as good. No one has ever looked bad in a Trojans uniform.
The Huskers' road uniforms might be the best in the nation. The helmet will never go out of style and it hasn't been changed in what seems like a century. The red pants mixed with the white tops is super stylish when combined with the red shoulder stripes and accents. The home red tops and white pants aren't quite as cool but are still one of the most fashionable outfits out there today.
The "UCLA" script on the helmet may be a bit out of date, but the baby blue and gold combination is simply the best. Comparable to the San Diego Chargers' powder blues, UCLA brings one of the single greatest color combinations to athletics. The simple pants and simple shoulder stripes will never need to be updated, as the clean, classic look will never go out of style.
Like the Sooners, the no frills and ordinary style of the Burnt Orange is awesome. The all-white look shown here are as smooth a uniform as there is in the nation. With even fewer accents than Oklahoma — like plain pants — Texas offers one of, if not the, most classic styles in all of college football. The orange tops not only match the style of Austin campus and the Longhorns' mascot but it also just looks like football. And the white helmets with the classic and unique Longhorn logo also get two big thumbs up.
It doesn't get much more stylish, famous or classic than the winged helmets of the Michigan Wolverines. The Maize and Blue color combination has been wildly popular for decades and the no-frills style will never be changed (hopefully). These uniforms stand out as some of the best in the history of the game and it's great that a school holds on to its tradition by keeping it simple.
Many love to hate the Golden Domers but secretly we all have to acknowledge how good these unis look on Saturdays. The classic, clean, no frills look has withstood the test of time and isn't likely to be changed any time soon. The slightly different gold hue in the pants looks excellent and the midnight blue tops are as good as it gets. The "ND" logos are a nice subtle touch and don't make the uniform too busy. And the special green jerseys are pretty sick too.
2. LSU Tigers
Purple and Gold may seem like a bizarre combination but there is little doubt that these awesome duds aren't one of the best uniforms in the nation. The classic shoulder stripes were well ahead of their time and withstood the test of time while the trim is minimal and simple as well. The helmets accent the whole outfit perfectly with simple style and traditional design. Even LSU's alternates are awesome.
If Michigan's uniforms deserve credit for their classic, simple and traditional styling, then Penn State's are the most fashionable in the nation. The dark navy blue and white look has been and will continue to be amazing for decades to come. The clean look occasionally will have white trim around the neck or arms, but rarely changes on game day. The numbers added to the side of the helmet also work well and give it an Alabama feel.
