Bauer began the football season the same way he ended the previous basketball season, in his school’s mascot costume. By October, he was in a Bulldogs uniform, throwing touchdown passes as the team’s starting quarterback. Bauer hadn’t played organized football since age 10, but the Paul Laurence Dunbar junior wanted to migrate from the sideline to the field. He worked his way from practice to the varsity when two late touchdowns at the end of a lopsided loss persuaded his coach to move the former mascot to the starting lineup. Bauer first a entered varsity game late against Bryan Station in a lopsided loss, but Bauer threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes. Once a starter, Bauer threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes against Lexington Henry Clay in an unexpected 22-19 win on Oct. 11. When football season is over, though, Bauer intends to hang up the shoulder pads and return to the mascot costume for basketball season.
