Mavs land Calderon

Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Point guard Jose Calderon has agreed to sign with the Dallas Mavericks.

"This is a great day! New challenge! Joining the family of the dallasmavs! I'm really happy! Can't wait to start the season!," Calderon said via Twitter Friday night.

The deal is reportedly for four years and worth $29 million.

Earlier in the day, the Mavs missed out on a chance to sign center Dwight Howard, who announced he was going to the Houston Rockets.

Calderon started last season playing for the Toronto Raptors, but as part of a three-team deal ended up in Detroit. He averaged 11.3 points and 7.1 assists over 73 contests.

For his career, which started in 2005 with the Raptors, Calderon has averaged 10.1 points and 7.2 assists in 553 contests.

Calderon should help the Mavericks in their long-range shooting. He is an overall 39.9 percent shooter from beyond the arc. Last season, he shot 46.1 percent from 3-point range, which was the best mark in the NBA.
