McAfee might even have a leg up (pun not intended) with how successful his podcast has become, as well as his popularity among college football and wrestling fans.

Few have built the resume that McAfee has since his 2017 retirement. He’s become a mainstay on ESPN programming and almost single-handedly launched the idea of athletes having unfiltered podcasts upon retirement.

McAfee previously walked away from a four-year, $30-million-per-year deal with FanDuel to sign a five-year contract to join ESPN in 2023, worth roughly $85 million.

According to Spotrac, McAfee earned just over $15 million during his time in the NFL. He signed a four-year contract worth $1.8 million upon being drafted in 2009. Indianapolis placed the franchise tag on him in March 2013 and paid him nearly $3 million that season.

The 2010 season marked a mild step back for McAfee statistically, with his average punt dropping two yards. More concerningly, he served a one-game suspension after an October arrest for public intoxication. McAfee apologized two weeks later, and he has since avoided any further legal issues.

By the time the 2011 season kicked off, McAfee had established himself as one of the league’s top punters. The spirit of ’76 still animates the fan base. They’re passionate. They don’t put up with tyrants or unwanted interlopers. And they’re not afraid to fight.

The founding fathers were not that much different than callers into the all-sports station. If WIP was around back then, you might have heard calls like: “Angelo, this is taxation without representation. The King is a bum. We should fire his ass. Buddy Ryan wouldn’t have stood for this crap.”

When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary to protest a sports business poll, Philadelphians will be there. Here are 10 reasons my hometown is the No. 1 sports city in America….

1. Most loyal fans

Much like the founding fathers, Philadelphia sports fans put local interests above all else. The attitude is that if you’re not with us, you’re against us and you’re going down. No professional fan base hates their enemies more. Just try wearing opposing jerseys at an Eagles game. Sometimes it goes too far with the inappropriate behavior. But it points to the camaraderie and common goal of everybody in the stadium. They also boo their own players, which speaks to how much they live and die for their teams.

2. Rocky

Yes, it’s fictional. But there’s a reason Apollo Creed wanted to fight Rock in Philadelphia in 1976. He wanted to give a local guy a shot on the nation’s birthday because he knew that’s what the city was all about. Rocky represented America taking down England, or something like that. Now the Art Museum steps that Rocky ran up are one of the enduring symbols of sports greatness.

3. Dr. J

You can debate Jordan vs. LeBron for the greatest player all you want … but there’s no debate about who is the coolest of all time. That’s Julius Erving, whose style on and off the court transcends time. Honorable Mention: Allen Iverson is right behind Dr. J when it comes to defining an era.

4. NFL Films

Ed Sabol started the company in Philadelphia and used local anchor John Facenda to voiceover his incredible football highlights. NFL Films’ commitment to quality is an underrated factor in the sport’s ascendance to the national pastime and Philly played a big part in its growth.

5. The Phillie Phanatic

His only real mascot rival might be the San Diego Chicken, but the Phanatic stood the test of time and has set the gold standard throughout the last 48 years. Anyone who has been to a Phillies game has been entertained by the friendly green monster. In 1988, Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda tried to fight the Phanatic in the funniest moment in mascot history.

6. Hockey violence

While the fame of the “Broad Street Bullies” might have faded over the years, there is no team in all of pro sports that seemed more fiction than reality than the ‘70s Philadelphia Flyers. They leaned into their reputation as bruisers in a way no other team ever has or ever will. Players like Dave “The Hammer” Schultz and Andre “Moose” Dupont would fight, while actually talented guys like Bobby Clarke would win a lot of games. The group likely inspired the greatest hockey movie of all time, Slap Shot, and defined a long-lost era in the sport.

7. The Palestra

The “Cathedral of College Basketball” is living basketball history. It used to host games of the big five colleges (‘Nova, Temple, La Salle, St. Joe’s and Penn). And some of the greatest high school stars of all time — from Wilt Chamberlain to Rasheed Wallace to Dawn Staley — played there. The only national comparison is Butler’s Hinkle Field House, but so much more talent came through the Palestra.

8. The NFL Draft

Forget the Declaration of Independence and Constitution. The city’s real claim to fame is creating the draft. Eagles owner Bert Bell was tired of stinking and not being able to sign players, so he created a system to reward bad teams and keep player salaries down. The first draft was on Feb. 8, 1936, in Philly. Mel Kiper nailed his first mock that year.

9. The Philly Special

No play is more synonymous with a city than the Philly Special in Super Bowl LII. Eagles quarterback Nick Foles mistakenly called for “Philly Philly” before catching the fourth-down touchdown to help beat the Patriots. Nothing is more Philadelphia than accidentally naming the play after the city.

10. The Wing Bowl

Radio personalities Angelo Cataldi and Al Morganti created the annual chicken wing eating contest that could only happen in Philly. Fans lined up before sunrise to get in to cheer the over-the-top, sometimes insane competition. While not always pretty, it was the perfect showcase for how deep the connection was between fans and Philadelphia sports talk radio. Ben Franklin definitely would have made a guest appearance at the Wing Bowl back in the day.

ESPN host and reporter Laura Rutledge opened up about the realities of balancing a high-profile career with motherhood.

The sports correspondent, who was named Miss Florida in 2012, is one of the most recognizable faces in NFL and college football media.

The proud mother of two is married to former professional baseball player Josh Rutledge.

Juggling both worlds has come with its own set of pressures. Rutledge recently appeared on the Summer Guest Series of the “Gramlich and Mac Lain” football podcast. She got honest about the anxiety that comes with wearing both hats.

“Ever since I had kids, I have felt like at work I haven’t been nearly as prepared as I needed to be, like constantly,” she said. “I always feel this pain of anxiety, like ‘I’m not ready, I didn’t do enough prep.'”

Rutledge spoke candidly about how her priorities have shifted over the years. The pressure of managing a demanding career alongside her personal life can be overwhelming.

“I spent the time that I should have been prepping on the floor with my kids, and I would never regret that,” she said. “But I don’t feel prepared enough, right? It leads me constantly to feel like I’m going to screw something up and ruin everything.”

In May, Rutledge announced she was leaving “SEC Nation” after a decade as host. She remains at ESPN, continuing as host of “NFL Live” and as a “Monday Night Football” sideline reporter.

“So I have many days and moments of self-doubt, but if I really tell myself the truth,” she said. “The truth is that as women, we’re capable of handling all of this. We’re capable of showing up and maybe making a few mistakes along the way, but also the whole time saying, ‘You know what? We got there. We did it.'”

Sometimes, sports fans in the United States dismiss the sport of ice hockey. They can’t wrap their head around the rules. Plus, the nature of the game made it inaccessible for large swaths of the nation’s geography until the last 30 years or so.

But the sport does hold a place in American hearts. The 1980 Olympic team remains one of the best – if not the best story – of modern sports in the country’s history. And the 2026 Winter Olympic hockey final between the U.S. and Canada drew in the nation, too.

Still, the sport is somewhat lacking when it comes to a presence on the big screen. Simply put, there aren’t a ton of great hockey movies.

There are some, though, and, frankly, we’d put the top two on this list on a top 25 sports movies of all-time, too.

5. Bon Cop, Bad Cop (2006)

Canadian readers should know “Bon Cop, Bad Cop” well. It was one of the highest grossing Canadian-made-and-released movies in the country’s history. For those from elsewhere, consider this your introduction to this movie that isn’t about hockey, but includes the sport throughout.

Long story short: a body is found on the border of Quebec and Ontario and a detective from each province work together to solve that homicide and series of others.

The hockey gist? Well, that would get into spoilers, but let’s say the joke (it’s an action-comedy a la “Lethal Weapon”) is about how seriously Canadians take their national game. Takes some patience to watch given its bilingual dialogue, but it’s worth it for a good time.

4. Goon (2011)

Another Canadian-released movie, “Goon” underwhelmed at the box office when it came out. But the Jay Baruchel-directed flick became a surprise hit – in that very 2010s way – when it hit streaming.

The movie features a strong cast for such a small-ish movie that tells the story of a gentle bar bouncer who becomes an enforcer for his local minor-league hockey team. It’s crude and rude, so know what you’re getting into, but it’s a winner.

3. Mystery, Alaska (1999)

If you’ve seen “Mystery, Alaska,” it’s funny to consider it a Disney picture. It’s replete with f-bombs — featuring a profanity-laden screaming monologue from Michael McKean — and countless references to sex, plus it was directed by Jay Roach, who made it in-between mega-hits “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me” and “Meet the Parents.”

Sure, there are too many characters and too many plot lines and both Russell Crowe and Hank Azaria are miscast. But there’s a kernel of a great movie here and it’s plenty funny, so long as you’re into the aforementioned peccadilloes.

2. Slap Shot (1977)

Notice something about all four picks so far? They’re all pretty harsh. Maybe that’s because hockey had (has?) a reputation for being rough-around-the-collar. It’s a working-class sport in its soul, even if it costs tens of thousands, if not hundreds, to reach elite travel status for the youths nowadays.

Back when “Slap Shot” came out in 1977, cable was hardly a thing. Americans south of the Mason-Dixon line weren’t terribly interested in the sport. The most handsome every-man that ever was, Paul Newman, helped bring the game to the rest of the country with this violent comedy. As hockey fans, we’re better for it.

1. Miracle (2004)

“Miracle” at the top of the list can’t be a surprise. Frankly, we’re not ones for the feel-good nostalgia that most sports movies provide. And while this 2004 release, on its surface, is just one of those kinds, director Gavin O’Connor and a stellar lead performance from Kurt Russell make it a classic.

Things are helped, too, by the casting of Team USA. The on-ice scenes have a fervency to them thanks in large part by the hiring of real former and current collegiate and professional hockey players. The screenplay allows their acting to come off as realistic instead of amateur-ish and “Miracle” is all the better for it.

Football may be the most popular sport in the United States, and the United States may be home to Hollywood, but the game lacks when it comes to great sports movies.

Baseball easily outshines football — as do boxing and basketball — with the best sports coming from those games. But football does have a few great pictures up its sleeve.

Here are the 10 we think are best, though you’re sure to disagree. Have at it!

10. The Waterboy (1998)

Great movie, maybe not. But iconic status stands for something and “The Waterboy” came out in the Adam Sandler-as-goofball heyday. It stands as his last of what we call the Moron Trio (with “Happy Gilmore” and “Billy Madison”).

9. Paterno (2018)

A movie dogged by both supporters of long-time Penn State football coach Joe Paterno and by those who think the film lets him off too easy, “Paterno” may not uncover anything new in the scandal, but it holds a rare great late-career performance from Al Pacino.

8. The Longest Yard (2005)

We’re talking about the Burt Reynolds version here, not Sandler. The 1974 version, directed by Robert Aldrich, has spawned a number of remakes besides Sandler’s. “The Longest Yard” is a little meaner than you probably remember.

7. Friday Night Lights (2004)

We wish it would have delved a bit more into the nuances of the book, but, hey, let’s be real. That was never going to happen. “Friday Night Lights” remains a decent look into the insane culture of high-school football in Texas.

6. Rudy (1976)

We know, we know. This is too low for most of you. “Rudy” is, without a doubt, the most legendary movie on this list. And it is good! Nothing wrong with sixth.

5. Brian’s Song (1971)

Yes, it’s literally a Movie of the Week. But 1971’s “Brian’s Song” is one of the best TV movies ever made. James Caan and Billy Dee Williams have excellent chemistry as Chicago Bears teammates Gale Sayers and Brian Piccolo. If “Rudy” makes you cry – and you enjoy crying – give this one a go.

4. Big Fan (2009)

Undoubtedly the least familiar movie on this list to most readers, “Big Fan” features Patton Oswalt as a delusional fanatic of the New York Giants. The movie shouldn’t have been prescient, but online sports discourse has only exacerbated since the release of this flick in 2009.

3. The Last Boy Scout (1991)

A chaotic motion picture that comes at you at 1,000 miles-an-hour, “The Last Boy Scout” is wild from its opening scene. If you’ve seen it, you know it. Tony Scott’s football movie isn’t really a football movie at all, but it’s a showcase in all the machismo the sport offers, anyway.

2. Heaven Can Wait (1978)

Warren Beatty. Jack Warden. Julie Christie. Charles Grodin. No better cast exists on this list. “Heaven Can Wait” was nominated for nine Academy Awards in 1979. It’s winsome and charming, masculine and romantic. Sort of like the next movie on this list.

1. Jerry Maguire (1996)

“Jerry Maguire” is a rather easy pick for No. 1. Spoofed to no end at the time, this Cameron Crowe picture played well for audiences of all (adult) ages and genders. Tom Cruise has rarely been better and the world was introduced to a wonderful Renee Zellweger, too.
