San Antonio Commanders Roster (AAF Football)

The AAF team that will call the Alamodome home has plenty of players with Texas and Oklahoma ties

Like several of the other teams in the Alliance of American Football (AAF), the introduction of the San Antonio Commanders means a professional football team is back in the city for the first time in several years. The last pro team to call San Antonio home was the Talons, who relocated from Tulsa and were in the Arena Football League from 2012-14.

The Commanders, like the Talons, will call the Alamodome home. The 64,000-seat domed stadium also previously hosted the New Orleans Saints when they were forced to relocate in 2005 in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

The Commanders are in good hands with head coach Mike Riley at the helm. Riley has more than 40 years of coaching experience, including serving as a head coach in college as well as the NFL, Canadian Football League, and the World League of American Football (later renamed NFL Europe). In fact, Riley is no stranger to the area, having coached the San Antonio Riders in the WLAF from 1991-92, during which he went 11-9.

Riley served as a consultant at Oregon State last season (where he was the head coach from 1997-98), but now he returns to the sidelines to lead the Commanders. His 52-man roster features 24 players who played their college ball in the state of Texas and neighboring Oklahoma. Included in that group are starting quarterback, Dustin Vaughan (West Texas A&M), as well as former Houston quarterback-turned-wide receiver Greg Ward Jr., TCU defensive back Nick Orr, and Oklahoma DBs Jordan Thomas and Zack Sanchez, among others.
