C.J. Stroud Passes Bryce Young as Heisman Trophy Betting Favorite

C.J. Stroud, Ohio State Buckeyes Football

The sportsbooks now list the Ohio State quarterback as the odds-on favorite to win the prestigious college football award.

Awarded annually since 1935 to the most outstanding player in NCAA football, this year’s Heisman Trophy field presents a solid investment opportunity.

Bettors should focus on signal-callers as only three non-quarterbacks have won the award dating back to 2000. Since the market opened back in January, the biggest change at DraftKings has taken place at the top of the betting board, Ohio State's C.J. Stroud (+220), who originally was the second overall betting choice, moved ahead of Alabama’s Bryce Young at the beginning of July.

In 2022, Young will be looking to become only the second player in NCAA football history to win the award twice (Archie Griffin; 1974, 1975). Young won the award in his sophomore season at odds of +800 after finishing second in the nation in passing yards (4,872) and passing touchdowns (47) en route to leading the Crimson Tide to an SEC title for the sixth time in the last eight years.

In the last 30 seasons, only one wide receiver has taken home the prestigious award. In 2020, DeVonta Smith of Alabama became the first wideout since Desmond Howard (1991) to win the Heisman. This year, Ohio State’s Jaxon Smith-Njigba has been assigned the lowest betting odds of any wide receiver at +2500.

Since 2000, only three running backs (Derrick Henry, 2015; Mark Ingram, 2009; Reggie Bush, 2005) have been garnered with Heisman honors. This year Texas’ Bijan Robinson slots in as the fifth overall choice at +2200.
