This Day in Sports History: August 18

The history of sports is both vast and rich, thanks to the existence of so many different ones and the longevity associated with them. With so much history to cull through, Athlon Sports wanted to offer the opportunity to look back and see what memorable things happened or milestones were reached on a specific date.

With that in mind, August 18 is a day in which a beaning cut short a promising baseball career and A-Rod extended his career grand slam record.

"The Long Hot Summer" premieres on ESPN this Sunday before moving over to ESPN+. The "30 for 30" documentary tells the story of the exciting 1998 home run race between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa and the complex feelings about it that emerged afterward in the wake of the steroid scandal.

With that in mind, May 29 is a day an all-time MLB great suddenly retired and Mount Everest was finally conquered.

1953: Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers to summit Mount Everest.

Mike Schmidt's and Jerry Remy's Comments Are Disappointing to Fans and the League

Both men sparked controversy with their comments Tuesday

Though different words were used and in somewhat different contexts, two men with close ties to MLB made distasteful and arguably racist remarks yesterday about the culture that so often is a point of pride in baseball.

The question posed recently whether Derek Jeter should be considered as part of the Yankees’ Mt. Rushmore piqued my interest. Not really the Jeter-Yankees part, but the idea that teams should have their own Mt. Rushmores. Who are the four individuals that have risen above all others for each organization? The question sounds simple. Even two guys sitting in a bar can figure that out, right? Not so fast. Let the arguments begin.

Major League Baseball is promoting an effort to identify the best four players in each team’s history with their "Franchise Four." We selected our choices for Mt. Rushmores a few years ago. Here are updated versions for all 30 teams. Who are the four baseball players that have risen above all others for each organization? The question sounds simple, right? Not so fast. Let the arguments begin.

Best Picks from 50 Years of the MLB Draft

Who are the best draft selections at each spot?
Who is the best player drafted No. 1 overall? Griffey? A-Rod? Chipper? What about the best player selected No. 10 overall? The best at each spot are all here from No. 1 through 40.

With the MLB Draft this week, it’s fun to look back at the some of the best picks over the past 50 years of the draft. Here’s the best selection at each of the first 40 positions in the draft.

1 Ken Griffey Jr., Seattle, 1987

Certainly there are numerous No. 1 overall selections worthy of being named the best. But I’ll take Griffey over Chipper Jones, Alex Rodriguez and David Price.

Best of the 2000s: David Price, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 2007

Rangers' Josh Hamilton Joins '4 HR Club'

Everything there is to know about four-home run games

The rare feat of hitting four home runs in one game has been accomplished just 14 times since 1900.

On Tuesday night, Josh Hamilton hit four home runs off Baltimore pitching.

How rare is that feat?

It’s been accomplished only 14 times since 1900; 16 if you go back prior to the turn of the century when rules were different. That’s four fewer than the number of perfect games during that time.
