NASCAR's 13 Greatest Moments of Retaliation

NASCAR Numbers Game: Newman better positioned for Chase success than Truex

Martin Truex is out and Ryan Newman is in.

That’s the call per NASCAR following the stock car equivalent of the Ocean’s Eleven robbery. In this scenario, Daniel Ocean, played by Michael Waltrip, didn’t get away with his cut of $150 million without breaking a sweat. The spot earned by Truex, via the wild card, was awarded to Newman once a pre-seeding 50-point penalty was put into effect by the sanctioning body.

Now, how does this impact the Chase field?

Hendrick Motorsports continues NASCAR domination at Pocono

Through the Gears: Four things we learned in Pocono
Reaction from Pocono Raceway, where Kasey Kahne beat Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon in NASCAR's GoBowling.com 400.

Jimmie Johnson isn’t the only driver this season that’s made a specialty of serving up wins for someone else. For Kasey Kahne, this year has been a long line of should-have-beens, as top 5s were the result in a car capable of outright domination out front. One of the best cars on intermediates this season, he’s instead on the Chase bubble through no fault of his own. Three restrictor plate wrecks — none of them completely of his making — combined with a wreck at Darlington while leading had him searching for a summer of redemption.

Are you prepared for Indianapolis, Part 2?

A long-standing belief across NASCAR shops is that what works at big, flat Indianapolis Motor Speedway also works at big, flat Pocono Raceway. Statistically, it’s true. A study on MotorsportsAnalytics.com this year proved that the two facilities closely correlate (with a comparatively high coefficient of 0.465) in results getting.

Ryan Newman scores NASCAR crown jewel win at The Brickyard 400

Through the Gears: Four things we learned at Indianapolis
Reaction from Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where Ryan Newman beat Jimmie Johnson in NASCAR's Brickyard 400.

Sunday wasn’t the only time Ryan Newman has stolen a win from under Jimmie Johnson’s nose. The Brickyard 400 pole sitter, who capitalized on “Five-Time’s” late-race slow pit stop to take Indianapolis, edged out his rival over a decade ago for the 2002 Rookie of the Year title. As a freshman, Johnson was flashy but Newman was more consistent, collecting 14 top-5 finishes and 22 top 10s to eke out the award in a close race.

“I think it was a success. It was such a great show. This is real racing right here, and that’s all I’ve got to say.”  Austin Dillon and Tony Stewart

With those words from race-winner Austin Dillon, NASCAR’s inaugural trip to the famed Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, was deemed a success.

Not that those in attendance or watching on television needed affirmation.
