Fayetteville, AR (SportsNetwork.com) - Bobby Portis tallied a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds to lead his Arkansas Razorbacks past the South Carolina Gamecocks, 75-55, in an SEC battle at Bud Walton Arena.
Michael Qualls came off the bench and narrowly missed a double-double of his own with 11 points and nine boards for Arkansas (17-5, 6-3 SEC). Rashad Madden added nine points and five assists in the win, which was the fourth for the Razorbacks in their last five games.
Sindarius Thornwell led South Carolina (11-10, 2-7) with 16 points. Marcus Stroman netted 10 points with six assists, and Mindaugas Kacinas grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. The Gamecocks have lost five of their last six contests.
Arkansas connected on just 35.1 percent of its first-half field goal tries, and made just 2-of-7 from 3-point distance, but the hosts still managed to take a 35-28 lead into the intermission. South Carolina connected on 9-of-28 shooting from the floor (32.1 percent) in the frame.
The Razorbacks improved to 44.1 percent shooting in the second half, but they missed all six of their attempts from beyond the arc. Arkansas was helped by a dismal 24.2 shooting percentage from the Gamecocks, who made just 1-of-13 from distance in the period.
Arkansas forced 20 South Carolina turnovers, which the team turned into 21 points in the win. The Razorbacks also owned a 38-22 advantage in points in the paint.
