Rosemont, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Cleveland Melvin tallied a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds as the DePaul Blue Demons outlasted the Chicago State Cougars in overtime, 77-70, in a non-conference clash at Allstate Arena.
Melvin also helped out on the defensive end of the floor with four blocks and three steals for DePaul (6-4). Billy Garrett scored 17 points, Brandon Young added 14 points and five assists, and Tommy Hamilton registered eight points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.
For Chicago State (4-6), Quinton Pippen and Nate Duhon each scored 18 points, while Clarke Rosenberg was right on their heels with 17 points.
DePaul controlled the first half, shooting a lofty 57.1 percent from the field while knocking down 11-of-13 at the foul line, as it went into intermission with a 38-32 lead.
The Blue Demons led by double digits early in the second half, but the Cougars climbed back in the game thanks to an 11-0 run. Trailing in the final minute of regulation, DePaul tied the game on a Young free throw to force overtime.
In the extra session, a Chris McKinney bucket gave DePaul an early lead and it cruised to the victory from there.
The Blue Demons, who won their first overtime game since 2009, came out on top despite committing a game-high 23 turnovers. They shot 29-of-40 from the foul line, compared to just 8-of-13 for Chicago State.
