Bloomington, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Led by 24 points and nine rebounds from James Blackmon Jr., the Indiana Hoosiers downed the UNC Greensboro Spartans, 87-79, in a non-conference matchup at Assembly Hall.
For the Hoosiers (5-1), Yogi Ferrell added 15 points, Robert Johnson and Troy Williams each finished with 11 points and Hanner Mosquera-Perea chipped in with 10 points.
Nicholas Paulos scored 24 points to lead the Spartans (1-5), while Clay Byrd finished with 20 points and Tevon Saddler and Kayel Locke each tallied 14 points.
The Hoosiers dominated the first half. They took a 50-34 lead into the break and used a 22-5 run to take control midway through the period. They were hot from the field in the first, connecting on 51.4 percent of their field goal tries, including 4-of-12 from beyond the arc. The Spartans shot just 38.2 percent from the field in the half, although they did hit on 7-of-14 from 3- point distance.
After intermission, Indiana continued to knock down shots, shooting 47.6 percent, including 5-of-12 from 3-point range. UNCG tried to get back in the game by shooting a scorching 62.1 percent from the field, including 7-of-9 from beyond the arc. With the Spartans hitting their shots in the second half, the Hoosiers had to fend off a late run, as they saw their lead shrink to just six points late in the period, but they held on down the stretch and handed the Spartans their fifth straight loss.
The Hoosiers owned the glass, outrebounding the Spartans, 39-26. Indiana also outscored UNCG in the paint, 30-22.
