Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Led by 28 points from Davante Gardner, the Marquette Golden Eagles took down the DePaul Blue Demons, 66-56, in a Big East Conference tilt at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.
For the Golden Eagles (9-6, 1-1 Big East), Jamil Wilson added 14 points and Todd Mayo finished with 10 points.
Cleveland Melvin led the Blue Demons (8-7, 0-2) with 22 points and Billy Garrett chipped in with 10. Brandon Young, who was averaging 14.4 ppg entering the game, was held scoreless on 0-of-9 shooting.
Despite shooting just 34.4 percent from the field in the opening period, DePaul led 30-26 at halftime by knocking down 7-of-13 from 3-point distance in the half. Marquette shot 45 percent from the field in the half but missed both of its 3-point tries.
The Golden Eagles heated up after the break, connecting on 57.9 percent from the field in the second half, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. The Blue Demons improved to 44 percent shooting from the field but did not have the same success from long range as they did in the first, making just 3-of-10 from 3-point distance. Trailing 47-46 with just over five minutes to play, the Golden Eagles used a 14-2 run to take the lead for good and secure their first conference win of the season.
Marquette had a 30-22 scoring advantage in the paint. The Golden Eagles also outrebounded the Blue Demons, 32-26.
