Amherst, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Trey Davis netted 25 points and dished out seven assists as the Massachusetts Minutemen escaped the Iona Gaels, 87-82, in non-conference action at the Mullins Center.
Derrick Gordon scored 19 points with seven rebounds for Massachusetts (7-6), which ended a two-game losing streak. Maxie Esho registered 11 points, and both Cady Lalanne and Jabarie Hinds added 10 points apiece. Lalanne grabbed eight rebounds to lead the team.
David Laury tallied a double-double for Iona (8-5) with 24 points and 11 rebounds. A.J. English added a double-double of his own with 16 points and 12 assists in 39 minutes of play. Schadrac Casimir added 12 points and Isaiah Williams chipped in with 11 in the defeat.
Massachusetts connected on an even 50 percent of its shots from the field in the first half, which led to a 46-40 halftime advantage. Iona made 41.5 percent of its tries in the period, including 5-of-15 from 3-point range.
The Minutemen beefed up their accuracy in the second frame, netting 53.6 percent from the floor. The Gaels connected on 46.7 percent of their attempts, and made 10-of-15 from the free-throw line to slice one point of UMass's first-half lead.
Massachusetts held a slight advantage in scoring from the charity stripe, 14-11, and owned an 11-4 edge in fast-break points. Iona won the battle in scoring in the paint, 44-34.
