Coral Gables, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Rion Brown tallied 21 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, as the Miami-Florida Hurricanes held off a late rally by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to make claim to a 71-64 victory in Atlantic Coast Conference action at the BankUnited Center.
Brown shot 6-of-13 from the field and knocked down all six of his free-throw attempts for Miami (13-13, 4-9 ACC), which has won two of three. Garrius Adams netted 14 points for the home team, while Davon Reed scored 12 off the bench.
For Notre Dame (14-13, 5-9), which had won two straight coming in, Pat Connaughton put up 22 points on 6-of-7 from 3-point range, while Demetrius Jackson had 17 points.
Miami shot a sizzling 61.9 percent from the field in the first half and carried a 38-26 lead at intermission. Notre Dame, meanwhile, made good on a mere 29 percent of its tries from the floor in the opening 20 minutes.
The Hurricanes led by 15 with under 11 minutes to play before the Irish stormed all the way back to make their deficit just one, 65-64, with 22 seconds left. Miami took care of business down the stretch, however, shooting 6-of-6 at the foul line over the final 21 seconds to hold on.
Miami won the rebounding battle, 36-26, and outscored Notre Dame at the free- throw line, 16-3.
