Greensboro, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Sheldon McClellan tallied 16 points and six assists for the Hurricanes as No. 6 seed Miami-Florida dispatched the 14th-seeded Virginia Tech Hokies, 59-49, in the second round of the ACC Tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Davon Reed chipped in 10 points for the Hurricanes (21-11), who will play the third-seeded Notre Dame Irish in the next stage of the tournament. Tonye Jekiri posted nine points and a game-high eight rebounds in the victory.
Adam Smith and Ahmed Hill netted 10 points apiece for the Hokies (11-22), who ended a seven-game losing streak on Tuesday in the opening round with a one- point win over Wake Forest.
The Hurricanes took a 25-19 lead into halftime after they connected on 45.5 percent of their field goal attempts in the first period. Virginia Tech went just 1-of-7 from 3-point range and was outrebounded, 14-10, before the break.
Miami extended its lead after the intermission by outscoring the Hokies, 11-4, at the free-throw line. Virginia Tech managed to take a 38-37 lead with 8:47 left to play, but Jekiri put the Hurricanes back in front on Miami's next possession with a dunk. Miami led for the final 7:45 of regulation.
The Hurricanes finished with a 33-26 advantage in total rebounds.
