Lincoln, NE (SportsNetwork.com) - Deverell Biggs scored 18 points off the bench, and the Nebraska Cornhuskers held on for a 63-58 win over the Northern Illinois Huskies in non-conference play at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
Fellow reserve Leslee Smith tallied 13 points and nine rebounds in the win, while Terran Petteway scored 12 for the Cornhuskers (5-2), who were coming off Sunday's eight-point win over Georgia to close out the Charleston Classic.
Jordan Threloff scored a career-high 18 points off the bench, while freshman Dontel Highsmith had a personal-best 13 points for the Huskies (2-4) in their road debut.
Nebraska took a 35-28 lead into the break thanks largely to a 12-2 spurt midway through the opening frame.
The Huskies shot just 7-of-25 (.280) from the floor in the second stanza and trailed by as many as 13 with 13 minutes to play. However, they managed to hang around and eventually had a chance to tie it in the final seconds, but Travon Baker's 3-point attempt was off the mark.
Both teams finished with 38 rebounds and 16 turnovers in the first meeting between these two schools since 1991.
