West Lafayette, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Raphael Davis registered a double- double with 16 points and 10 rebounds as the Purdue Boilermakers held on to defeat the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, 92-85, in Big Ten Conference action at Mackey Arena.
Davis, who shot 5-of-11 from the floor, added a game-high seven assists for the Boilermakers (19-9, 11-4 Big Ten) who are now tied with Maryland for second place in the league standings. Basil Smotherman accounted for a team- best 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field, followed by Jon Octeus with 14 points. Before fouling out, AJ Hammons posted 13 points, while Dakota Mathias and Kendall Stephens pitched in 11 points apiece.
The Scarlet Knights (10-19, 2-14), losers of 12 straight, were paced by Kadeem Jack with 18 points and 11 boards, while Bishop Daniels dropped in 17 points. Myles Mack and DJ Foreman both added 15 points and Mike Williams 10 off the bench.
Purdue, which has now won four straight and eight of the last nine, led from start to finish as it made good on an impressive 60.0 percent from the floor in the first half, en route to a 46-30 edge at the break. The Knights knocked down a total of only 10 field goals through the first 20 minutes of action, a mere 2-of-10 beyond the arc.
In the second half the lead reached 20 for the Boilermakers, but down the stretch the team allowed Rutgers to close the gap to only six points with 20 seconds remaining. Unfortunately for the visitors, the clock worked against them as they fell yet again in conference play.
Purdue, which shot 7-of-15 behind the 3-point line on the night, won the first meeting of the season, 61-51, in Piscataway earlier this month.
