New Orleans, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - Barrington Stevens scored 14 points as the sixth-seeded South Alabama Jaguars defeated the seventh seed Arkansas- Little Rock Trojans, 57-55, in the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament at Lakefront Arena.
Ken Williams added 12 points and six rebounds for the Jaguars (12-20). Dionte Ferguson chipped in with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Abdul Lewis contributed 11 rebounds. South Alabama will take on third seed ULM in the quarterfinals on Friday night.
As for the Trojans (13-18), Roger Woods scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Josh Hagins added 13 points and four steals.
The Jaguars shot 46.2 percent from the field and outrebounded the Trojans 22-11 they established a 32-22 lead at the break. UALR converted just 29.6 percent from the field and connected on 4-of-11 shots from beyond the arc in the first half.
In the second half USA shot only 32.1 percent from the field, 2-of-11 on the perimeter, yet the defense held on for the two-point win. The Trojans shot 31.6 percent from the field and just 3-of-14 on the outside.
South Alabama outrebounded UALR, 47-36, to help the Jags get beyond 17 turnovers.
