Blacksburg, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Frank Eaves made a layup with two seconds remaining in regulation to lift Appalachian State to a 65-63 win over the Virginia Tech Hokies in non-conference play inside Cassell Coliseum.
Eaves led all scorers with 19 points as the Mountaineers (1-2) notched their first win under new head coach Jim Fox. Tommy Spagnolo recorded a double- double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Dustin Clarke added 11 points to help ASU emerge victorious in the last leg of the team's season-opening, three-game road trip.
Adam Smith had 11 points, and Justin Bibbs and Devin Wilson scored 10 apiece as the Hokies (2-1) suffered their first loss under new head coach Buzz Williams.
Both teams struggled from the floor in the first half. ASU led by as many as 12 midway through the opening frame, but Virginia Tech managed to cut the deficit to 29-28 at the break.
The Hokies shot 54 percent from the floor in the second half and grabbed a six-point lead with just under 10 minutes remaining in regulation. However, Eaves came through with four points and a key rebound in the final two minutes.
With the victory, the Mountaineers snapped a six-game slide in the head-to- head series.
