Athlon hands out the awards from the Week 13 action in the ACC
With the 13th weekend of the 2018 season in the books for the ACC, it’s time to take a look at the best of the best and honor some of the top performances. Each week, Athlon Sports will highlight some of the top performers in college football with its weekly awards section. Here’s a look at Athlon Sports’ picks for the ACC's offensive, defensive, coordinator, team and freshman from Week 13.
ACC Week 13 College Football Awards
Offensive Player of the Week: Eric Dungey, QB, Syracuse
Dungey guided Syracuse to its ninth win with a huge performance over Boston College. The senior completed 21 of 34 passes for 362 yards and three touchdowns and added 34 yards and three scores on the ground.
Defensive Player of the Week: Joe Jackson, DE, Miami
Jackson recorded six tackles (2.5 for a loss) and 2.5 sacks in Miami’s win over Pitt.
Coordinator of the Week (Offense): Warren Ruggiero, Wake Forest
Ruggiero’s offense recorded 517 yards (6.5 per play) and converted 12 of 18 third-down attempts in Saturday’s 59-7 win over Duke. The Demon Deacons gashed the Blue Devils for 340 yards and went eight-for-eight in red zone trips. Additionally, Ruggiero’s group scored on six out of their last seven possessions.
Coordinator of the Week (Defense): Manny Diaz, Miami
Miami’s defense held Pitt to just three points and 200 overall yards in Saturday’s 24-3 victory. The Panthers were limited to 3.2 yards a play and had seven three-and-outs. Diaz’s group generated 14 tackles for a loss and six sacks and did not allow a drive to go beyond 50 yards.
Team of the Week: Wake Forest
Wake Forest earned its sixth victory and reached bowl eligibility with a 59-7 win over Duke on Saturday. Despite losing quarterback Sam Hartman to a season-ending injury in early November, the Demon Deacons won two out of their last three games to reach the postseason for the third consecutive year. Wake Forest recorded 517 total yards on offense and held the Blue Devils to 251 yards (3.6 per play).
Freshman of the Week (Offense): Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson
Lawrence completed 27 of 36 throws for 393 yards and one touchdown and added 42 rushing yards in Clemson’s win over South Carolina.
Freshman of the Week (Defense): Dax Hollifield, LB, Virginia Tech
Hollifield recorded six tackles (one for a loss), one pass breakup and recovered a fumble in Virginia Tech’s win over Virginia.
