Arizona went from barely having a pulse on the recruiting trail for the 2017 class to more than doubling its commitment list on Wednesday, landing defensive end Kylan Wilborn, defensive tackle Kurtis Brown, and tight end Bryce Wolma.
Wolma helped lead Saline (Mich.) High School to a 10-1 record in 2015 as a versatile weapon on offense. Lining up with a hand on the ground as a tight end or on the outside in the red zone, the large (6-4, 235) target showed great quickness and soft hands in the passing attack becoming a legitimate weapon for the Hornets against opposing Michigan high school defenses. At the end of his junior campaign, Wolma had 24 receptions for 351 yards with five touchdowns.
Arizona landed another rangy athletic talent in Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) High School’s Wilborn. He was utilized on offense as a running threat, picking up 185 yards on 35 carries with three touchdowns and was a constant presence in the backfield against Los Angeles-area teams as a defensive end.
Brown also was a two-way standout lining up for Liberty High School in Bakersfield, Calif. Brown is being lauded as a potential defensive tackle but possesses idea size (6-3, 260) to develop into a strong-side defensive end. Brown wasn’t as dangerous on offense as Wilborn or Wolma, catching just one pass for a 30-yard touchdown, but was a bigger presence on defense. Brown recorded a team-high 96 tackles with eight tackles for a loss and six sacks over 13 games played last season.
Wolma’s recruiting journey was atypical, committing to Northwestern on April 3 only to decommit three days later and siding with Arizona. The 3-star tight end from Michigan also had offers from Tennessee, Iowa State, Central Michigan, Buffalo, Western Michigan, Ball State, Wake Forest, Toledo, Bowling Green, Colorado, and West Virginia.
Wilborn was lightly recruited before verbally committing to the Wildcats with one other offer coming from Hawaii. Brown has double-digit offers from teams like Washington State, Nevada, Fresno State, Oregon State, Colorado State, Purdue, San Diego State, and Colorado.
Arizona’s 2017 class is now five strong, highlighted by Augustus Hawkins (Los Angeles) High School 4-star athlete Greg Johnson.
