The Big 12's 2017 college football season was all about Oklahoma. After Bob Stoops retired in early June, offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley was promoted to head coach and the Sooners never missed a beat en route to a 12-1 record. With Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield directing the offense, Oklahoma averaged 44.9 points a game, claimed a Big 12 title and the No. 2 ranking headed into the College Football Playoff. In addition to Mayfield's standout season, linebacker Ogbonnia Okoronkwo claimed Athlon's Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors, and Orlando Brown was one of the best offensive lineman in college football this year. Outside of Oklahoma, TCU rebounded from a 6-7 record last season to finish second in the Big 12 and earn a 10-3 mark headed into the Alamo Bowl. Additionally, Iowa State showed marked improvement under coach Matt Campbell, Oklahoma State won at least nine games for the fourth time in five seasons, and Texas Tech is returning to a bowl game after a one-year absence.
