Big 12 Second-Half Predictions and Midseason Review

Athlon reviews the Big 12 and looks ahead to the second half of 2017.

The 2017 college football season has reached the halfway point in the Big 12, and it’s time to hand out midseason awards and make a few predictions for the second half of the year. At the midpoint of 2017, a three-team battle is shaping up for the top spot in the league. Oklahoma was upset at home against Iowa State, but the Sooners still have time to regain a spot in the CFB Playoff. Coach Lincoln Riley’s team has matchups remaining against West Virginia, Oklahoma State and TCU, along with a potential rematch versus the Horned Frogs or the Cowboys in the Big 12 Championship Game. The Horned Frogs are the biggest surprise in the conference through the first seven weeks of the season. Coach Gary Patterson’s defense is limiting opponents to 5.1 yards per play, while the offense has been efficient and playing mistake-free ball behind quarterback Kenny Hill. Texas and West Virginia headline the next tier of teams, with Kansas State, Iowa State and Texas Tech up next. Kansas is likely headed for a winless season in Big 12 play, while Baylor is rebuilding under first-year coach Matt Rhule.

Editors Mitch Light and Steven Lassan offer their up their picks for midseason awards and second-half predictions in the Big 12.
