Calls Mount for Longtime College Football Coach to Retire After Saturday's Game
The North Carolina Tar Heels (-10.5) entered their game with the James Madison Dukes as clear favorites, despite having to use their third-string quarterback, Jacolby Criswell.
The Tar Heels lost their starter Max Johnson in Week 1 to a season-ending leg injury. After starting Connor Harrell in Weeks 2 and 3, the Tar Heel's replaced him with Criswell on the third series of their victory against North Carolina Central last week. After going 14-23 for 161 yards and a touchdown, Criswell gave the Tar Heel's a tough decision to make entering Week 4.
That said, Criswell beat out Harrell for the starting spot on Saturday against JMU, which has turned out to be a thrilling upset for the Dukes after the first half. The Dukes scored 53 first half points against the Tar Heels, much thanks to four turnovers from North Carolina's offense. Two of these turnovers came on interceptions from Criswell, who had two touchdowns in the first half as well.
This 53-21 first-half beat down has led fans to bash North Carolina head coach Mack Brown, who has been one of college football's best for over 30 years.
The legendary coach Brown has been coaching in college football for 46 years, creating one of the best legacies in college football history. Brown has received four Coach of the Year awards, including one national Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year award.
Brown is now 76 years old and is certainly on the backend of his coaching career. After this embarrassing first half, it could be time to hang it up. North Carolina has been solid thus far this season going 3-0, but a blow out like this is very hard to recover from, especially considering they were favorites entering the game.
One fan took to Twitter or "X", saying, "He probably doesn't want to let go and retire, but these performances are just embarrassing."
Other fans were in agreement, and believe that he should retire based on this performance.
"He should just retire man," one fan said. Another fan agreed, saying, "Time for him to retire."
One fan also highlighted that the Tar Heels let up 53 first half points to the "same team" that scored just 13 points in their victory against Gardner-Webb, an FCS program, making the blowout much more embarrassing.
If this does begin to spark the end of his incredible coaching career, Brown will go down as one of the best to ever do it, and have an unbelievable legacy to remembered by.
