College Bowl Game Sponsor's 'Hideous' Request Leaves ESPN Broadcaster Speechless
One of the sidelights of Friday night's Minnesota vs. Virginia Tech Duke Mayo Bowl in Charlotte, North Carolina, which was born two decades ago as the Queen City Bowl, was the willingness of the game's broadcasters--Matt Barrie and Aaron Murray--to take part in demonstrating different and unexpected applications of mayonnaise.
Apparently, it's not just for bologna sandwiches anymore. In fact, the second offbeat use for mayo caught special attention. That's because Barrie and Murray were asked to do something rather unusual with their Duke's Mayo--to dunk a chocolate Dove bar in mayonnaise for a true health-food snack.
"Our friends of Duke's Mayo have brought food item No. 2, here we've got the mayo, and they have brought us a Dove chocolate bar," Barrie explained.
Murray noted that he's trying to lose weight, and putting mayo on ice cream might be enough to take him off frozen treats for the rest of the year. After letting one play roll through, the two tried the uh, delicacy, and Murray was not exactly thrown off by it.
But Barrie? Well, he could be seen, within three seconds of first tasting the Dove-Duke combo, bending over--on camera--and spitting the whole thing out into a garbage can as he made incoherent groaning noises.
The broadcast returned to game action, with Virginia Tech working on a second-down play, but with Barrie still unable to speak.
It was a full 20 seconds before Murray finally broke the silence, saying, "It really is not bad."
But Barrie was hearing none of it. "Dude, it is awful. What is your problem?" he said.
Murray repeated that he kind of liked it, and that he loves ice cream so much.
Barrie, undeterred, declared, "That. Was. Hideous."
Probably not the best look for the Duke's Mayo Bowl sponsors, of course, but Barrie should be credited for his candor.
