The first weekend of December sees some conference races coming down the finish line as the ACC could have its conference championship matchup cemented this weekend. Clemson will have a chance to join Notre Dame in Charlotte this weekend, and both teams are playing in games we will be watching closely against the spread.
But what other games are worth your consideration this week? This week we are holding off on going all-in with Penn State while you should feel confident about one explosive team in the MAC.
Here are some of the picks worth following this weekend in college football as we look to rebound from a tough Thanksgiving weekend showing.
Note: All times are ET and all games are on Saturday, Dec. 5.
Rutgers (+11.5) vs. Penn State, 12 p.m.
After scoring its first win of the season, Penn State has seen the line against Rutgers continue to swing in their favor this week. But it's not quite time to get carried away with the Nittany Lions just yet. Greg Schiano will have a few tricks up his sleeve this week and Penn State has to prove they have fixed some of their problems before putting those concerns to rest. Penn State wins, but Rutgers may be the play here. Penn State 33, Rutgers 23
Kansas State (+9) vs. Texas, 12 p.m.
How much should you trust Texas? The way this season has gone, there shouldn't be much faith in Texas blowing the doors off of Kansas State. Things have not gone well for the Wildcats but they managed to keep things close against Oklahoma State and Baylor. They can keep this one close enough at home to close out the season. Texas 34, Kansas State 26
Syracuse (+33.5) at Notre Dame, 2:30 p.m.
Notre Dame has officially booked its reservation for the ACC Championship Game but still must continue to win to keep its spot in the College Football Playoff picture. The Irish have been on a roll and Syracuse should be no match for Ian Book and company. But spotting nearly five touchdowns is risky. Take the points for Syracuse. Notre Dame 43, Syracuse 20
Editor's note: Buffalo-Ohio was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns on Friday after this article was initially published.
Buffalo (-11) at Ohio, 3:30 p.m.
We probably will not see Jaret Patterson explode for an eight-touchdown performance, but we are certainly playing the hot hand this week with the Buffalo offense. The Bulls have outscored their opponents by a minimum of 19 points in each game this season, and that is a trend worth following this week. Buffalo 46, Ohio 32
Clemson (-21.5) at Virginia Tech, 7:30 p.m.
Clemson has spotted some of its opponents big points at times this season, and it has burned the Tigers on a few of those occasions. But this week is a week to lock in Clemson for a big win. A victory for Trevor Lawrence and company over the Hokies will lock in the Tigers for a date with Notre Dame in the ACC Championship Game. Nothing will stand in Clemson's way this week with that revenge on the line. Clemson 49, Virginia Tech 20
