College Football Rankings: NCAAF Top 25 (After Week 1)

Anthony Richardson, Florida Gators Football

Weekly college football top 25 rankings are a big part of every season, and Athlon Sports will update its top 25 following the games each weekend. The first weekend of the 2022 season was headlined by Florida's upset of Utah in the Swamp, Ohio State's win over Notre Dame, Georgia's easy victory against Oregon, and Florida State's crazy one-point win versus LSU in New Orleans. Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State and Michigan take the top four spots, with Clemson at No. 5 and Notre Dame at No. 6 in the post-Week 1 top 25 rankings. With the first week of the 2022 season officially in the books, here are the top 25 teams in college football:

College Football Top 25 Rankings (After Week 1)

1. Alabama (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Utah State

Quarterback Bryce Young scored six times, and Alabama’s defense allowed just 136 yards and pitched a shutout in Saturday’s 55-0 win over Utah State. Up next: The Crimson Tide head to Austin for a showdown against future SEC rival Texas.

2. Georgia (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Oregon

The Bulldogs dominated from the opening snap in a 49-3 blowout of Oregon. Quarterback Stetson Bennett threw for 368 yards and two touchdowns and added one score on the ground. Georgia’s revamped defense also looked strong, allowing only 313 total yards (4.6 yards per play).

3. Ohio State (1-0)
Week 1 Result: Defeated Notre Dame

The game didn’t go as most expected, but the Buckeyes earned a hard-fought win over Notre Dame (21-10). Instead a high-powered passing game leading the way, Ohio State won with its defense (253 yards allowed and six tackles for a loss) and rushing attack (172 yards).

4. Michigan (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Colorado State

Jim Harbaugh’s team cruised to an easy 51-7 win over Colorado State on Saturday. The Wolverines dominated the line of scrimmage by recording seven sacks and 11 tackles for a loss, while the offense churned out 234 yards on the ground. The quarterback battle will continue into Week 2 with J.J. McCarthy getting the start.

5. Clemson (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Georgia Tech

Different year, same story? There were small signs of progress for Clemson's offense in a 41-10 victory over Georgia Tech but not enough to eliminate most of the concerns about this group. Freshman Cade Klubnik showcased his potential with a late scoring drive, which only adds to the ongoing quarterback intrigue in Death Valley.

6. Notre Dame (0-1)
Week 1 Result:
Lost to Ohio State

The Fighting Irish played Ohio State better than most expected, but coach Marcus Freeman’s team needs more from its passing attack (177 yards) to help an offense that managed only 253 yards on Saturday night.

7. Texas A&M (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Sam Houston

A lengthy weather delay made for challenging conditions to establish any continuity or consistency for coach Jimbo Fisher’s team. However, it’s hard to argue with a 31-0 victory to open ’22. The Aggies need better production on the ground (just 110 yards on 32 carries), however.

8. USC (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Rice

The Trojans averaged 9.3 yards per play and rolled to an easy 66-14 victory over Rice in coach Lincoln Riley’s debut. Although the Owls scored only 14 points, USC’s defense showed vulnerabilities it needs to clean up before facing Stanford in Week 2.

9. Baylor (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated UAlbany

The Bears didn’t sweat much in an easy 69-10 win over UAlbany. The offense recorded 573 yards (8.4 yards per play), while the defense limited the Great Danes to just 237 yards (four yards per snap).

10. Florida (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Utah

The Billy Napier era in Gainesville is off to a good start after an upset win over Utah. The play of quarterback Anthony Richardson - 274 total yards and three scores - was a big reason for the victory. Also, Florida's defense made two clutch stops in the second half to keep the Utes out of the end zone.

11. Oklahoma (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated UTEP

The Brent Venables era is off to a good start. Oklahoma crushed UTEP 45-13 in Venables’ debut, with both sides of the ball chipping in to the easy victory. Behind quarterback Dillon Gabriel, the Sooners averaged 8.1 yards per play on offense. The defense limited the Miners to 3.8 yards a snap and generated six sacks.

12. Arkansas (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Cincinnati

The Razorbacks pounded Cincinnati’s defense for 224 rushing yards, and quarterback K.J. Jefferson accounted for four total touchdowns in a hard-fought 31-24 victory.

13. Utah (0-1)
Week 1 Result:
Lost to Florida

Two missed scoring opportunities inside of the six-yard line – including an interception in the end zone with less than 20 seconds left – will haunt the Utes in a 29-26 loss at Florida.

14. NC State (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated East Carolina

Sometimes, it’s all about surviving and holding on for a victory. That’s what NC State did in a tough road environment against upset-minded East Carolina on Saturday. The Pirates rallied late but two misses (an extra point and a last-second field goal) went wide to give the Wolfpack a 21-20 win.

15. Oregon (0-1)
Week 1 Result:
Lost to Georgia

Overmatched. That’s the easiest way to sum up the Ducks’ performance in a 49-3 loss to Georgia. Oregon should be among the best teams in the Pac-12 this year, but there’s a wide gap between this team and the top three – Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State – in college football.

16. BYU (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated USF

Dominant. That's the easiest way to sum up BYU's 50-21 victory over USF on Saturday.

17. Michigan State (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Western Michigan

The Spartans used 14 fourth-quarter points to pull away from Western Michigan in a 35-13 victory on Friday night. Quarterback Payton Thorne tossed four touchdowns, and UNLV transfer Jacoby Windmon generated four sacks for the Michigan State defense.

18. Oklahoma State (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Central Michigan

The final score (58-44) was a little deceiving if you didn’t see much of Oklahoma State’s win over Central Michigan. The Cowboys led 51-15 early in the third quarter, but the Chippewas scored 22 points in the final 15 minutes to close the gap on the scoreboard. And as indicated by the final result, Oklahoma State has work to do with its rebuild defense. However, quarterback Spencer Sanders (463 total yards and six overall scores) picked up where he left off from the Fiesta Bowl.

19. Tennessee (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Ball State

As expected, Volunteers cruised to an easy win over Ball State on Thursday night. A bigger test against Pitt awaits in Week 2.

20. Miami (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Bethune-Cookman

The Mario Cristobal era in Coral Gables is off to a good start. The ‘Canes dominated Bethune-Cookman in a 70-13 blowout on Saturday.

21. Wisconsin (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Illinois State

A good sign in Wisconsin’s 38-0 win over Illinois State: Quarterback Graham Mertz connected on 14 of 16 passes for 219 yards and a touchdown.

22. Wake Forest (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated VMI

Mitch Griffis was solid (21 of 29 for 288 yards and three touchdowns) in his first start at quarterback for the Demon Deacons. Wake Forest scored on five of its first six drives in the easy 44-10 win over VMI.

23. Kentucky (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Miami (Ohio)

Will Levis appeared to be in midseason form in Kentucky’s 37-13 win over Miami (Ohio). The senior completed 21 of 32 passes for 303 yards and three touchdowns and guided the Wildcats to an average of 6.1 yards per play.

24. Cincinnati (0-1)
Week 1 Result:
Lost to Arkansas

The Bearcats battled hard in Fayetteville, but coach Luke Fickell's team struggled to find an answer for quarterback K.J. Jefferson (285 total yards and four scores).

25. Houston (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated UTSA

Houston’s 37-35 overtime win against UTSA flew under-the-radar thanks to the other high-profile matchups on Saturday. Quarterback Clayton Tune delivered several times in the clutch for the Cougars, including going airborne on a run to reach the endzone on the game-winning score.
