College Football Rankings: NCAAF Top 25 (After Week 10)

Jimbo Fisher, Texas A&M Aggies football

Weekly college football top 25 rankings are a big part of every season, and Athlon Sports will update its top 25 following the games each weekend. The 10th weekend of the 2021 season was headlined by Purdue's upset of Michigan State, close wins by Alabama, Cincinnati and Ohio State, along with North Carolina's victory over Wake Forest. Georgia, Cincinnati, Alabama and Oklahoma take the top four spots, with Oregon at No. 5 and Ohio State at No. 6 in the post-Week 10 top 25 rankings. With the 10th week of the 2021 season officially in the books, here are the top 25 teams in college football:

College Football Top 25 Rankings (After Week 10)

1. Georgia (9-0)
Week 10 Result:
Defeated Missouri

Total domination is the best way to sum up Georgia’s 43-6 win over Missouri. The Bulldogs had a lopsided edge in yardage (505 to 273), and both quarterbacks (Stetson Bennett and JT Daniels) helped to guide the offense to 337 passing yards – the most by Georgia in SEC play this year.

2. Cincinnati (9-0)
Week 10 Result:
Defeated Tulsa

The Bearcats were a little sluggish as a heavy favorite for the third week in a row, but coach Luke Fickell’s team used two goal-line stands to beat Tulsa 28-20. Cincinnati’s defense has some work to do after giving up 297 rushing yards to the Golden Hurricane.

3. Alabama (8-1)
Week 10 Result:
Defeated LSU

Survive and advance is part of the path to a national championship, but Alabama’s 20-14 victory over LSU doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence. The Crimson Tide were held to just six rushing yards on 26 attempts, committed nine penalties, missed a field goal and had a late turnover that gave the Tigers a chance to take the lead.

4. Oklahoma (9-0)
Week 10 Result:
Off Week

The Sooners were off on Saturday and return to action next week at Baylor.

5. Oregon (8-1)
Week 10 Result:
Defeated Washington

The Ducks pounded Washington’s defense for 329 rushing yards in a dominant 26-16 victory.

6. Ohio State (8-1)
Week 10 Result:
Defeated Nebraska

The Buckeyes had their hands full with Nebraska, but coach Ryan Day’s defense got a couple of crucial late stops, and quarterback C.J. Stroud threw for 405 yards to help guide the team to a victory. Ohio State still needs to work on scoring touchdowns in the red zone and limiting some of the big plays allowed on defense.

7. Michigan State (8-1)
Week 10 Result:
Lost to Purdue

Michigan State was the second top-10 team to lose to Purdue this year, as coach Mel Tucker’s team was defeated 40-29 in West Lafayette. The Spartans have to tighten up in the secondary (536 passing yards allowed) to have any shot at beating Ohio State to win the Big Ten East in a few weeks.

8. Michigan (8-1)
Week 10 Result:
Defeated Indiana

Last week’s disappointment versus Michigan State didn’t carry into Saturday’s game against Indiana for coach Jim Harbaugh’s squad. Michigan recorded 411 total yards and limited the Hoosiers to 195 yards in an easy 29-7 victory.

9. Notre Dame (8-1)
Week 10 Result:
Defeated Navy

The Fighting Irish averaged seven yards per play and limited the Midshipmen to just 184 yards to earn the 10th victory in 12 games against Navy under coach Brian Kelly.

10. Texas A&M (7-2)
Week 10 Result:
Defeated Auburn

A dominant defensive effort powers Texas A&M to a 20-3 victory over Auburn. The Aggies are still alive for the SEC West title.

11. Oklahoma State (8-1)
Week 10 Result:
Defeated West Virginia

The Cowboys managed only 285 total yards on offense, but an explosive effort wasn’t needed after the defense held West Virginia to just 133 yards in a 24-3 victory.

12. Ole Miss (7-2)
Week 10 Result:
Defeated Liberty

The Rebels used a clutch performance from quarterback Matt Corral, along with nine sacks and three takeaways from the defense, to ensure Hugh Freeze’s return to Oxford didn’t result in an upset win.

13. Wake Forest (8-1)
Week 10 Result:
Lost to North Carolina

North Carolina scored 24 points in the fourth quarter to rally to a 58-55 victory and end Wake Forest’s perfect season. The Demon Deacons still have plenty to play for, as coach Dave Clawson’s team is in the driver’s seat to win the ACC Atlantic.

14. Auburn (6-3)
Week 10 Result:
Lost to Texas A&M

The Tigers had no answers on offense (226 total yards) in a 20-3 loss at Texas A&M.

15. BYU (8-2)
Week 10 Result:
Defeated Idaho State

As expected, BYU had no trouble handling Idaho State in a 59-14 victory. The Cougars are off next Saturday before closing with matchups against Georgia Southern and USC.

16. Iowa (7-2)
Week 10 Result:
Defeated Northwestern

Iowa’s offense remains a concern, but Saturday’s 17-12 win over Northwestern snapped a two-game losing streak and keeps coach Kirk Ferentz’s team in the mix to win the Big Ten West.

17. Baylor (7-2)
Week 10 Result:
Lost to TCU

Baylor’s showdown with Oklahoma next Saturday lost a little appeal after the Bears were upset 30-28 by TCU. Coach Dave Aranda’s team allowed 562 yards (the most by this team all season), while the offense had two costly turnovers.

18. Penn State (6-3)
Week 10 Result:
Defeated Maryland

Jahan Dotson’s big day (11 catches for 242 yards and three touchdowns) helps Penn State erase last week’s disappointment in a 31-14 win over Maryland.

19. Houston (8-1)
Week 10 Result:
Defeated USF

No letdown for coach Dana Holgorsen's team, as Houston used 646 total yards to beat USF 54-42. With SMU losing at Memphis, the Cougars are closing in on a trip to the AAC title game.

20. Coastal Carolina (8-1)
Week 10 Result:
Defeated Georgia Southern

Quarterback Grayson McCall is out indefinitely due to injury, but backup Bryce Carpenter guided the Chanticleers to a 28-8 victory over Georgia Southern on Saturday night.

21. Pitt (7-2)
Week 10 Result:
Defeated Pitt

Another big performance from quarterback Kenny Pickett (416 passing yards and four overall scores) helps Pitt easily dispatch Duke in a 54-29 win.

22. UTSA (9-0)
Week 10 Result:
Defeated UTEP

The one-two punch of quarterback Frank Harris and running back Sincere McCormick accounted for four touchdowns in UTSA’s 44-23 win over UTEP.

23. NC State (7-2)
Week 10 Result:
Defeated Florida State

The Wolfpack beat Florida State 28-14 to set up a potential ACC Atlantic Division title showdown next week versus Wake Forest.

24. Wisconsin (6-3)
Week 10 Result:
Defeated Rutgers

The Badgers have won five in a row and have held their opponents to just 37 points in that span.

25. Purdue (6-3)
Week 10 Result:
Defeated Michigan State

The Boilermakers used their high-powered passing game to defeat a top-five team for the second time this year, as quarterback Aidan O'Connell threw for 536 yards and three scores to lift Purdue to the 40-29 upset over Michigan State.
