Weekly college football top 25 rankings are a big part of every season, and Athlon Sports will update its top 25 following the games each weekend. The 10th weekend of the 2022 season was headlined by Georgia's dominant victory over Tennessee, LSU's stunner over Alabama, Texas' win at Kansas State, and Notre Dame's upset over Clemson. Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and Tennessee take the top four spots, with TCU at No. 5, Oregon at No. 6 and LSU at No. 7 in the post-Week 10 top 25 rankings. With the 10th week of the 2022 season officially in the books, here are the top 25 teams in college football:
College Football Top 25 Rankings (After Week 10)
1. Georgia (9-0)
Week 10 Result: Defeated Tennessee
Kirby Smart’s team made a statement to the rest of college football with a 27-13 victory over Tennessee. The Volunteers’ high-powered offense managed only 289 yards (3.9 yards per play) and was held to two third-down conversions on 14 attempts. Also, Georgia’s defense registered six sacks and forced two takeaways. Quarterback Stetson Bennett was excellent (17 of 25 for 257 yards and two scores) in guiding the offense to an average of 6.2 yards per play.
2. Ohio State (9-0)
Week 10 Result: Defeated Northwestern
The weather in Evanston was awful, so let’s not penalize Ohio State too much for its 21-7 win over Northwestern. However, the Buckeyes have room to improve up front on both sides of the ball before the looming showdown against Michigan.
3. Michigan (9-0)
Week 10 Result: Defeated Rutgers
The Wolverines got off to a slow start but eventually pulled away for a 52-17 victory over Rutgers. Michigan scored 38 points in the final two quarters, and the defense limited the Scarlet Knights to just 57 yards in that span.
4. Tennessee (8-1)
Week 10 Result: Lost to Georgia
Tennessee’s perfect season ended with a 27-13 loss in Athens, but the news wasn’t all bad for coach Josh Heupel’s team. Despite the defeat, losses by Alabama and Clemson aided the Volunteers’ hopes of a trip to the CFB Playoff. After scoring over 34 points in every game this season, Tennessee managed only 289 yards against the Bulldogs.
5. TCU (9-0)
Week 10 Result: Defeated Texas Tech
Another week, another strong second half lifts TCU to a win. The Horned Frogs used 21 points in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 34-24 victory over Texas Tech. Running back Kendre Miller ran for 158 yards and a score, while quarterback Max Duggan threw for 195 yards and two touchdowns in the win for coach Sonny Dykes.
6. Oregon (8-1)
Week 10 Result: Defeated Colorado
The Ducks moved one step closer to a trip to the Pac-12 title game after crushing Colorado 49-10. Quarterback Bo Nix threw for 274 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two more scores to lead an offense that averaged 7.3 yards per snap.
7. LSU (7-2)
Week 10 Result: Defeated Alabama
A Baton Rouge stunner: Jayden Daniels’ two-point completion in overtime gave LSU a win over Alabama and placed coach Brian Kelly’s team in control of the SEC West. The Tigers were outgained 465 to 367 but held Alabama’s offense in check (5.7 yards per play) and made stops when it mattered (four field goals).
8. Alabama (7-2)
Week 10 Result: Lost to LSU
From heavy favorite to win it all in 2022 to outside of the College Football Playoff. That’s the storyline for the Crimson Tide after Saturday night’s loss in Baton Rouge. Alabama outgained LSU 465 to 367, but the offense couldn’t get into the end zone (four field goals) and couldn’t get a stop late when the game was on the line.
9. USC (8-1)
Week 10 Result: Defeated California
It wasn’t pretty, but USC eventually held off California in a 41-35 shootout on Saturday night. Quarterback Caleb Williams led the way with 360 passing yards and four scores, and the Trojans needed every bit of that performance with a leaky defense (469 total yards by California).
10. Clemson (8-1)
Week 10 Result: Lost to Notre Dame
Clemson’s playoff hopes are on life support after Notre Dame dominated the Tigers 35-14 on Saturday night in South Bend. Offensive issues popped up once again for coach Dabo Swinney’s team, as Clemson managed only 4.3 yards per play and was outgained 348 to 281. The Fighting Irish won the battle up front, gashing the Tigers for 263 yards on the ground and limiting the Tigers to 90 rushing yards over 25 carries.
11. UCLA (8-1)
Week 10 Result: Defeated Arizona State
Running back Zach Charbonnet was sidelined due to injury, but the UCLA ground game didn't miss a beat in Saturday night's 50-36 win over Arizona State. The Bruins ran for 402 yards and five scores to help the offense average a healthy 9.2 yards per play in the win.
12. Ole Miss (8-1)
Week 10 Result: Off Week
The Rebels were off in Week 10 and return to action next Saturday against Alabama.
13. Utah (7-2)
Week 10 Result: Defeated Arizona
Quarterback Cam Rising returned from injury, but the Utes didn’t need much from their passing game. Instead, Utah pounded Arizona’s front for 306 yards in an easy 45-20 victory for coach Kyle Whittingham’s squad.
14. Penn State (7-2)
Week 10 Result: Defeated Indiana
The Nittany Lions took out some frustration from last week’s loss to Ohio State with a 45-14 victory over Indiana. Behind freshman running backs Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton, Penn State ran for 304 yards to lead an offense that averaged 5.8 yards a snap. The defense limited Indiana to 196 yards and generated six sacks and 16 tackles for a loss.
15. North Carolina (8-1)
Week 10 Result: Defeated Virginia
Quarterback Drake Maye had another standout performance (26 of 37 for 293 yards and two touchdowns and 74 yards on the ground) to lead North Carolina to a 31-28 victory over Virginia. The win moves the Tar Heels one step closer to winning the ACC Coastal.
16. Tulane (8-1)
Week 10 Result: Defeated Tulsa
Quarterback Michael Pratt was efficient (11 of 19 for 125 yards), and the Green Wave pounded Tulsa for 357 rushing yards in a 27-13 victory on Saturday. A key three-game stretch is on tap for coach Willie Fritz’s team: UCF, SMU and at Cincinnati.
17. NC State (7-2)
Week 10 Result: Defeated Wake Forest
Freshman quarterback MJ Morris (18 of 28 for 210 yards and three scores) and three takeaways by the defense was enough for NC State to win 30-21 over Wake Forest. Losing Devin Leary was a significant blow to the Wolfpack’s offense, but Morris has stepped up in a big way the last two games.
18. Texas (6-3)
Week 10 Result: Defeated Kansas State
The Longhorns’ second-half issues popped up again, but the defense made a timely stop with the game on the line to lift coach Steve Sarkisian’s team to an important 34-27 victory at Kansas State. Running back Bijan Robinson ran for 209 yards to lead an offense that averaged 6.6 yards per play.
19. Notre Dame (6-3)
Week 10 Result: Defeated Clemson
The Fighting Irish scored a signature win for first-year coach Marcus Freeman by beating Clemson 35-14. Notre Dame won the battle up front on both sides of the ball, and the defense limited the Tigers to just 4.3 yards per play and forced two takeaways, including an interception returned for a touchdown.
20. Kansas State (6-3)
Week 10 Result: Lost to Texas
K-State’s hopes of a trip to the Big 12 title game took a hit on Saturday with a 34-27 loss to Texas. The Wildcats made things interesting in the second half, but the rush defense had no answer for the Longhorns’ ground game (269 yards), and the offense had two costly turnovers in the seven-point defeat.
21. Illinois (7-2)
Week 10 Result: Lost to Michigan State
Missed opportunities were to blame for Illinois’ surprising 23-15 defeat to Michigan State. The Fighting Illini outgained the Spartans 441 to 294, but five drives into Michigan State territory ended without points. Although Saturday’s loss was a setback, coach Bret Bielema’s team still controls its destiny in the Big Ten West title picture.
22. Washington (7-2)
Week 10 Result: Defeated Oregon State
Despite awful weather conditions, the Huskies still got 298 passing yards from quarterback Michael Penix Jr. to beat Oregon State 24-21 on Friday night. Penix Jr. spotted the Beavers seven points on an interception returned for a score, but the junior led the team on a 92-yard drive to get the game-winning field goal with less than 10 seconds left.
23. Liberty (8-1)
Week 10 Result: Defeated Arkansas
Liberty joins the top 25 after a 21-19 upset over Arkansas. The Flames were a double-digit underdog, but coach Hugh Freeze’s defense limited the Razorbacks to just 144 yards and won the battle up front by registering four sacks and 14 tackles for a loss. Quarterback Johnathan Bennett was questionable due to a bout with the flu, but he delivered in Fayetteville with 224 passing yards and three scores.
24. Florida State (6-3)
Week 10 Result: Defeated Miami
The Seminoles scored their second-largest margin of victory against Miami with a 45-3 win on Saturday night. John Rhys Plumlee was out due to injury, but No. 2 quarterback Mikey Keene completed 22 of 28 passes for 219 yards and three scores to lead UCF to a road 35-28 win at Memphis. The Knights have a huge showdown coming up in Week 11 at Tulane.
