College Football Rankings: NCAAF Top 25 (After Week 6)

Weekly college football top 25 rankings are a big part of every season, and Athlon Sports will update its top 25 following the games each weekend. The sixth weekend of the 2021 season was headlined by Texas A&M's upset of Alabama, Iowa's win over Penn State and Oklahoma's comeback victory against Texas. Georgia, Iowa, Cincinnati and Alabama take the top four spots, with Oklahoma at No. 5 and Michigan at No. 6 in the post-Week 6 top 25 rankings. With the sixth week of the 2021 season officially in the books, here are the top 25 teams in college football:

College Football Top 25 Rankings (After Week 6)

1. Georgia (6-0)
Week 6 Result:
Defeated Auburn

Stetson Bennett continued his steady play in relief of JT Daniels at quarterback, as the Bulldogs earn their fifth consecutive victory over rival Auburn with a 34-10 win on Saturday.

2. Iowa (6-0)
Week 6 Result:
Defeated Penn State

The Hawkeyes limited Penn State to just 95 yards in the second half, while the offense scored 13 unanswered points in the final two quarters to rally for a 23-20 win.

3. Cincinnati (5-0)
Week 6 Result:
Defeated Temple

The Bearcats had no letdown after last week’s win at Notre Dame, as coach Luke Fickell’s team crushed Temple 52-3 on Friday night.

4. Alabama (5-1)
Week 6 Result:
Lost to Texas A&M

Crimson Tide outgained Texas A&M 522 to 379 but simply made too many mistakes in a tough environment. Saturday night’s defeat was the first time Nick Saban lost to a former assistant.

5. Oklahoma (6-0)
Week 6 Result:
Defeated Texas

True freshman Caleb Williams replaced Spencer Rattler and provided a big-time spark, as the Sooners rallied from a 28-7 deficit to win a 55-48 thriller in the Red River Rivalry.

6. Penn State (5-1)
Week 6 Result:
Lost to Iowa

The Nittany Lions had Iowa on the ropes in the first half, but an injury to quarterback Sean Clifford marked a key turning point in the game.

7. Michigan (6-0)
Week 6 Result:
Defeated Nebraska

Wolverines used a balanced attack on offense (255 passing and 204 rushing), but the real story was the play of the defense, including a late forced fumble that resulted in the game-winning field goal.

8. Oregon (4-1)
Week 6 Result:
Off Week

With injuries taking an early toll on both sides of the ball, the off week came at a good time for the Ducks to regroup going into a key stretch of games in the Pac-12.

9. Ohio State (5-1)
Week 6 Result:
Defeated Maryland

Buckeyes seem to be finding their stride after pounding Maryland for a 66-17 victory. Quarterback C.J. Stroud was on fire (406 yards and five scores), and the defense held the Terrapins to just 4.5 yards per snap. 

10. Michigan State (6-0)
Week 6 Result:
Defeated Rutgers

The Spartans scored touchdowns of 60-plus yards to end Rutgers’ hopes of an upset on Saturday.

11. Ole Miss (5-1)
Week 6 Result:
Defeated Arkansas

The Rebels averaged 8.7 yards per play on offense, while the defense held on a two-point attempt for a win as time expired in wild back-and-forth affair in Oxford

12. Coastal Carolina (6-0)
Week 6 Result:
Defeated Arkansas State

Chanticleers crushed Arkansas State 52-20 on Thursday night to move to 6-0. Up next: A huge showdown against Appalachian State on Oct. 20.

13. Kentucky (6-0)
Week 6 Result:
Defeated LSU

Total domination is the best way to describe Kentucky’s win over LSU. The Wildcats gashed the Tigers for 330 rushing yards, and the defense didn’t allow a point until midway through the third quarter.

14. Florida (4-2)
Week 6 Result:
Defeated Vanderbilt

Emory Jones accounted for 313 total yards and four touchdowns in Florida’s easy 42-0 rout of Vanderbilt. 

15. Notre Dame (5-1)
Week 6 Result:
Defeated Virginia Tech

The Fighting Irish used two timely drives in the fourth quarter to rally for a last-second 32-29 victory at Virginia Tech.

16. Oklahoma State (5-0)
Week 6 Result:
Off Week

The Cowboys were off in Week 6 and return to action next Saturday at Texas.

17. Arkansas (4-2)
Week 6 Result:
Lost to Ole Miss

K.J. Jefferson delivered a huge performance (411 total yards and six touchdowns), but the Razorbacks fell just short in Oxford.

18. BYU (5-1)
Week 6 Result:
Lost to Boise State

Quarterback Jaren Hall returned from injury, but BYU was unable to overcome four turnovers in a 26-17 lost to Boise State.

19. Arizona State (5-1)
Week 6 Result:
Defeated Stanford

The Sun Devils quietly moved to 5-1 after Friday night’s win over Stanford. The ground attack pounded the Cardinal for 255 yards, while the defense made key stops when Stanford’s offense crossed midfield.

20. Texas A&M (4-2)
Week 6 Result:
Defeated Alabama

The Aggies scored one of the biggest SEC upsets in recent memory and added a huge win for coach Jimbo Fisher’s resume in College Station.

21. NC State (4-1)
Week 6 Result:
Off Week

The Wolfpack were off in Week 6 and return to action next Saturday at Boston College.

22. Wake Forest (6-0)
Week 6 Result:
Defeated Syracuse

Demon Deacons avoid the upset loss at Syracuse to remain the ACC’s only unbeaten team after Week 6. 

23. Auburn (4-2)
Week 6 Result:
Lost to Georgia

The Tigers were simply outmanned against Georgia, but the schedule won’t get any easier with Arkansas, Ole Miss and Texas A&M up next.

24. SMU (6-0)
Week 6 Result:
Defeated Navy

All three phases of the game came up big for SMU. The Mustangs limited Navy to 3.3 yards per rush, quarterback Tanner Mordecai tossed two scores, and special teams delivered a kickoff return for a touchdown in a 31-24 victory.

25. Texas (4-2)
Week 6 Result:
Lost to Oklahoma

The Longhorns got off to a fast start and seemed to be in control of the Red River Rivalry against Oklahoma in the first half. However, the game turned on the Sooners’ quarterback switch, as well as better play out of Oklahoma’s defense in the final two quarters.
