Ranking the top 25 teams in college football after Week 1.

College Football Top 25: Ohio State QBWeekly college football top 25 rankings are a big part of every season, and Athlon Sports will update its top 25 following the games each weekend. The first weekend of the 2017 season didn't disappoint. Alabama knocked off Florida State in Atlanta on Saturday night, while Tennessee and Georgia Tech played an entertaining overtime affair in the same stadium on Monday night. Ohio State rebounded from a slow start to beat Indiana, with Washington, Penn State and Clemson picking up victories to start the season. Maryland's upset win and UCLA's comeback victory pushed both teams into the top 25 after Week 1. 

 

College Football Top 25 Rankings

 

1. Alabama (1-0)

Week 1 Result: Defeated Florida State

 

The Crimson Tide showed once again the path to Atlanta and the national championship game still runs through Tuscaloosa.

 

2. Ohio State (1-0)

Week 1 Result: Defeated Indiana

 

The Buckeyes started slow, but the offense came alive in the second half for a road win at Indiana.

 

3. Washington (1-0)

Week 1 Result: Defeated Rutgers

 

The Huskies had to sweat more against Rutgers than it did last season, but the Scarlet Knights appear to be better in 2017. Chris Petersen’s Washington team also looks poised for another CFB Playoff run.

 

4. Penn State (1-0)

Week 1 Result: Defeated Akron

 

Trace McSorley and Saquon Barkley picked up where they left off last season, as the Nittany Lions handled Akron 52-0.

 

5. Clemson (1-0)

Week 1 Result: Defeated Kent State

 

Replacing Deshaun Watson isn’t going to be easy, but Kelly Bryant was sharp in his first start.

 

6. Michigan (1-0)

Week 1 Result: Defeated Florida

 

Despite losing a handful of key players, Michigan’s defense – as evidenced in Saturday’s game – isn’t going to miss a beat in 2017.

 

7. Florida State (0-1)

Week 1 Result: Lost to Alabama

 

With Deondre Francois sidelined for the rest of the year, it’s up to the defense and ground game to keep Florida State in the CFB Playoff hunt.

 

8. Oklahoma (1-0)

Week 1 Result: Defeated UTEP

 

As expected, Baker Mayfield and the Oklahoma offense was sharp against UTEP on Saturday.

 

9. USC (1-0)

Week 1 Result: Defeated Western Michigan

 

It’s clear the Trojans have some issues to address before the Week 2 matchup against Stanford.

 

10. Auburn (1-0)

Week 1 Result: Defeated Georgia Southern

 

The Tigers delivered a dominant effort on defense in Saturday’s win over Georgia Southern, while new quarterback Jarrett Stidham knocked off the rust in his first action since 2015.

 

11. LSU (1-0)

Week 1 Result: Defeated BYU

 

The early returns on new coordinator Matt Canada are positive. And once again, the Tigers have one of the SEC’s best defenses.

 

12. Wisconsin (1-0)

Week 1 Result: Defeated Utah State

 

The Badgers started slow but scored 59 unanswered points in a 59-10 victory over Utah State. Freshman running back Jonathan Taylor looks is a rising star to watch.

 

13. Oklahoma State (1-0)

Week 1 Result: Defeated Tulsa

 

Mason Rudolph and the nation’s deepest receiving corps were on display in Thursday night’s win over Tulsa.

 

14. Georgia (1-0)

Week 1 Result: Defeated Appalachian State

 

Freshman Jake Fromm will be under the spotlight at Notre Dame in Week 2 after Jacob Eason’s knee injury in the opener.

 

15. Stanford (1-0)

Week 1 Result: Bye Week

 

After a dominant win against Rice in Week 0, we should find out more about Stanford in Week 2 versus USC.

 

16. Louisville (1-0)

Week 1 Result: Defeated Purdue

 

Reigning Heisman winner Lamar Jackson recorded 485 total yards and carried the Cardinals to a 35-28 victory over Purdue on Saturday night.

 

17. Notre Dame (1-0)

Week 1 Result: Defeated Temple

 

New quarterback Brandon Wimbush was impressive in the win over Temple. The defense will be under the spotlight against Georgia in Week 2. How much has this group improved under new coordinator Mike Elko?

 

18. Virginia Tech (1-0)

Week 1 Result: Defeated West Virginia

 

The Hokies-Mountaineers clash in Landover was one of the best games from Week 1.

 

19. Tennessee (1-0)

Week 1 Result: Defeated Georgia Tech

 

Turnovers by Georgia Tech and big plays by receiver Marquez Callaway and running back John Kelly were enough to propel the Volunteers to an overtime win.

 

20. Oregon (1-0)

Week 1 Result: Defeated Southern Utah

 

The Willie Taggart era in Eugene is off to a good start.

 

21. Kansas State (1-0)

Week 1 Result: Defeated Central Arkansas

 

Bill Snyder’s Wildcats have some work to do on defense, but quarterback Jesse Ertz (10 of 16 for 333 yards and four scores) was sharp in the win over Central Arkansas.

 

22. Miami (1-0)

Week 1 Result: Defeated Bethune-Cookman

 

After giving Nebraska all it could handle in Week 1, Arkansas State should have Miami’s attention.

 

23. Maryland (1-0)

Week 1 Result: Defeated Texas

 

DJ Durkin is a coach on the rise, and after the win at Texas on Saturday, it’s fair to say this team may have been underrated in the preseason.

 

24. USF (2-0)

Week 1 Result: Defeated Stony Brook

 

Something to watch: Two games, two slow starts for the Bulls.

 

25. UCLA (1-0)

Week 1 Result: Defeated Texas A&M
