College Football Top 25: Jalen Hurts, Alabama Crimson Tide Football

Weekly college football top 25 rankings are a big part of every season, and Athlon Sports will update its top 25 following the games each weekend. The third weekend of the 2017 season was filled with exciting games and intriguing non-conference and league matchups. Alabama defeated Colorado State to remain No. 1 in the rankings, but Clemson closed the gap after knocking off Louisville in convincing fashion on Saturday night. Oklahoma, USC and Penn State round out the top five once again, with Washington and Oklahoma State highlighting the next tier of teams. Vanderbilt, Utah, San Diego State and Mississippi State join the rankings following the Week 3 action.

College Football Top 25 Rankings

1. Alabama (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated Colorado State

Crimson Tide still looking for the right answers to spark the pass rush, but this team is still loaded with talent on defense.

2. Clemson (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated Louisville

Kelly Bryant was sharp in the biggest start of his career, and Clemson’s defense once again came up big in the win against Louisville

3. Oklahoma (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated Tulane

No hangover for the Sooners after last week’s win against Ohio State.

4. USC (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated Texas

Thanks to a few timely forced turnovers, and the play of quarterback Sam Darnold, the Trojans survived a close call from upset-minded Longhorns.

5. Penn State (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated Georgia State

The Nittany Lions win over Georgia State was the final tune up before Big Ten play starts next week at Iowa.

6. Washington (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated Fresno State

Dynamic receiver/return man Dante Pettis has returned a punt for a touchdown in three consecutive games.

7. Oklahoma State (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated Pitt

Pitt’s defense had no answers for quarterback Mason Rudolph and the explosive Oklahoma State offense on Saturday.

8. Ohio State (2-1)

Week 3 Result: Defeated Army

 Quarterback J.T. Barrett now owns the Big Ten record for most touchdowns in a career.

9. Michigan (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated Air Force

The Wolverines are still looking for a few answers on offense as Big Ten play starts this week.

10. Florida State (0-1)

Week 3 Result: Bye Week

The Seminoles return to action this weekend after a game against ULM was canceled and the contest with Miami was rescheduled due to Hurricane Irma. 

11. Wisconsin (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated BYU

Despite losing standout linebacker Jack Cichy to injury, and a new coordinator (Jim Leonhard), the Badgers have allowed only 30 points through three games this season.

12. Georgia (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated Samford

Mississippi State’s win over LSU has added a lot of intrigue for Saturday night’s matchup in Athens.

Week 3 Result: Defeated Boston College

Notre Dame’s rushing average (10.1 per carry) against Boston College set a new school record.

19. Maryland (2-0)

Week 3 Result: Bye Week

After a bye week on Saturday, the Terrapins return to action on Sept. 23 against UCF.

20. TCU (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated SMU

Coach Gary Patterson’s team has a few things to clean up, but the Horned Frogs look ready for their Big 12 opener against Oklahoma State in Week 4.

21. San Diego State (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated Stanford

The Aztecs are 2-0 against Pac-12 teams in 2017.

22. Miami (1-0)

Week 3 Result: Bye Week

After a game versus Arkansas State was canceled, and the matchup against Florida State was rescheduled, the Hurricanes will return to the gridiron this Saturday against Toledo.

23. LSU (2-1)

Week 3 Result: Lost to Mississippi State

Question marks remain about LSU’s offense, and both sides of the ball need to be more physical at the line of scrimmage following Saturday night’s loss to Mississippi State.

24. Vanderbilt (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated Kansas State

Commodores join the top 25 after Saturday night’s win against Kansas State. Quarterback Kyle Shurmur (703 yards and eight touchdowns to zero interceptions) is quietly off to a strong start.

25. Utah (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated San Jose State

Sophomore quarterback Tyler Huntley is averaging 360 total yards through his first three career starts.
