Weekly college football top 25 rankings are a big part of every season, and Athlon Sports will update its top 25 following the games each weekend. The fourth weekend of the 2017 season was filled with exciting games and intriguing non-conference and league matchups. Alabama dominated Vanderbilt to remain No. 1 in the rankings, and Clemson remained at No. 2 following a victory against Boston College. Oklahoma, USC and Penn State round out the top five once again, with Washington and Ohio State highlighting the next tier of teams. Georgia and TCU are two teams trending up in this week's edition of the rankings. USF, Washington State, NC State and Duke join the rankings following the Week 4 action.
College Football Top 25 Rankings
1. Alabama (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Vanderbilt
Crimson Tide flexes its muscles on both sides of the ball in easy win over Vanderbilt.
2. Clemson (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Boston College
Led by a rushing attack that recorded 342 yards, Clemson pulled away in the fourth quarter from Boston College for a 34-7 victory.
3. Oklahoma (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Baylor
Sooners averaged 10.6 yards per play on offense in win over Baylor, but the defense gave up too many big plays in the secondary.
4. USC (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated California
USC’s defense came up big in Saturday’s win against California. The Trojans forced four turnovers in the fourth quarter, limited the Golden Bears to 3.4 yards per carry and sacked quarterback Ross Bowers three times.
5. Penn State (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Iowa
Nittany Lions avoid upset to Iowa thanks to quarterback Trace McSorley’s perfect toss in last-minute thriller at Kinnick Stadium.
6. Washington (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Colorado
Running back Myles Gaskin recorded 202 yards on 27 attempts in Saturday night’s 37-10 win at Colorado. Prior to Saturday’s game, Gaskin had just 153 yards through the first three games of 2017.
7. Ohio State (3-1)
Week 4 Result: Defeated UNLV
Signs of improvement in the passing game? Quarterback J.T. Barrett has completed 37 of 50 passes for 479 yards and seven touchdowns since the loss to Oklahoma.
8. Michigan (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Purdue
Quarterback John O’Korn provided a spark for the offense after Wilton Speight’s injury, and Michigan’s defense held Purdue to less than 20 total yards in the second half.
9. Georgia (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Mississippi State
After Saturday night’s win over Mississippi State, it’s clear Georgia is the No. 2 team in the SEC this year.
10. TCU (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Oklahoma State
Horned Frogs had the perfect formula to knock off Oklahoma State: Control the line of scrimmage and time of possession and limit Mason Rudolph’s big plays to the nation’s best receiving corps.
11. Wisconsin (3-0)
Week 4 Result: Bye Week
The Badgers return to action this Saturday against Northwestern.
12. Oklahoma State (3-1)
Week 4 Result: Lost to TCU
Mike Gundy’s high-powered offense was largely held in check, and the defense simply gave up too much yardage on the ground to knock off TCU.
13. Louisville (4-1)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Kent State
The Cardinals had an easy win against Kent State, but coach Bobby Petrino certainly wants to see this team clean up the turnovers lost (four).
14. Virginia Tech (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Old Dominion
Hokies avoid a letdown with matchup against Clemson in Week 5 and cruise to easy win over Old Dominion.
15. Notre Dame (3-1)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Michigan State
Fighting Irish were outgained 496 to 355 against Michigan State but converted three turnovers into 21 points to take home a 38-18 victory.
16. Auburn (3-1)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Missouri
Quarterback Jarrett Stidham has misfired on just nine passes over the last two games. Auburn has a key SEC test this Saturday against Mississippi State.
17. Mississippi State (3-1)
Week 4 Result: Lost to Georgia
Georgia’s defense had the right answers to contain Nick Fitzgerald and Aeris Williams on the ground.
18. Miami (2-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Toledo
As expected, the Hurricanes had some rust to knock off since this team has been out of action since the opener. However, coach Mark Richt’s team scored 42 points in the second half to put away Toledo.
19. San Diego State (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Air Force
Aztecs get another big performance from Rashaad Penny to hold off Air Force’s upset bid in rainy Colorado Springs.
20. Utah (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Arizona
Utes lose starting quarterback Tyler Huntley due to injury, but five Arizona turnovers helped coach Kyle Whittingham’s team escape with a 30-24 victory in Tucson.
21. LSU (3-1)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Syracuse
The offensive line and passing attack continue to be an area of concern for coach Ed Orgeron.
22. NC State (3-1)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Florida State
Victory over Florida State is a signature (and much needed) win for coach Dave Doeren’s tenure.
23. Washington State (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Nevada
The Cougars are 4-0 for the first time since 2001.
24. USF (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated Temple
After giving up 5.82 yards per play last season, USF’s defense ranks first in the AAC by holding opponents to just 3.89 yards per play through four contests in 2017.
25. Duke (4-0)
Week 4 Result: Defeated North Carolina
Blue Devils join the top 25 after beating rival North Carolina for the second year in a row.
