Ranking the top 25 teams in college football after Week 2
Weekly college football top 25 rankings are a big part of every season, and Athlon Sports will update its top 25 following the games each weekend. The second weekend of the 2018 season featured its share of big matchups, including Georgia's win over South Carolina, Clemson defeating Texas A&M in College Station, Arizona State's upset victory over Michigan State and Stanford's 17-3 win over USC. With the second week of the 2018 season officially in the books, here are the top 25 teams in college football:
College Football Top 25 Rankings (After Week 2)
1. Alabama (2-0)
Week 2 Result: Defeated Arkansas State
Through two games, Tua Tagovailoa has completed 25 of 35 passes for 455 yards and six touchdowns.
2. Clemson (2-0)
Week 2 Result: Defeated Texas A&M
Texas A&M QB Kellen Mond gave Clemson’s defense fits, but coach Dabo Swinney’s team holds on for two-point win in College Station.
3. Georgia (2-0)
Week 2 Result: Defeated South Carolina
Georgia’s rebuilt defense allowed only 336 yards to South Carolina, while coach Kirby Smart’s offense averaged 6.7 yards a play in a statement victory for the Bulldogs.
4. Ohio State (2-0)
Week 2 Result: Defeated Rutgers
Buckeyes cruise to another easy win behind quarterback Dwayne Haskins. However, the schedule gets tougher next week with a matchup against TCU.
5. Auburn (2-0)
Week 2 Result: Defeated Alabama State
As expected, Auburn took care of business in tune-up game against Alabama State. Next week’s clash against LSU will be one of the top games to watch in Week 3.
6. Oklahoma (2-0)
Week 2 Result: Defeated UCLA
Quarterback Kyler Murray was sharp in the win over UCLA, but it came at a price with running back Rodney Anderson’s knee injury.
7. Wisconsin (2-0)
Week 2 Result: Defeated New Mexico
Badgers started slow in Saturday’s win over New Mexico but pulled away for 45-14 victory. The defense limited the Lobos to just 211 total yards, while Wisconsin’s offense got 253 rushing yards and three scores from running back Jonathan Taylor.
8. Notre Dame (2-0)
Week 2 Result: Defeated Ball State
Inconsistent performance (17 of 31 and 3 INTs) from Brandon Wimbush raises question marks about the quarterback position once again.
9. Washington (2-0)
Week 2 Result: Defeated North Dakota
Huskies rebound from loss to Auburn with an easy win over North Dakota. A big challenge awaits next Saturday at Utah.
10. Penn State (2-0)
Week 2 Result: Defeated Pitt
Nittany Lions own bragging rights in the Keystone State after dominant win over Pitt.
11. LSU (2-0)
Week 2 Result: Defeated Southeastern Louisiana
LSU’s offensive line could have its hands full against Auburn’s defensive front next Saturday.
12. Virginia Tech (2-0)
Week 2 Result: Defeated William & Mary
Hokies never punted in Saturday’s 62-17 over against William & Mary.
13. Mississippi State (2-0)
Week 2 Result: Defeated Kansas State
Running back Kylin Hill and a standout defense lead the way for Mississippi State in big road win at Kansas State.
14. Boise State (2-0)
Week 2 Result: Defeated UConn
Broncos roll up 818 total yards in 62-7 blowout over UConn.
15. Stanford (2-0)
Week 2 Result: Defeated USC
Running back Bryce Love gets back on track (136 yards), while defense keeps USC out of the end zone to earn a key Week 2 Pac-12 victory.
16. UCF (2-0)
Week 2 Result: Defeated South Carolina State
Knights cruise to easy win over South Carolina State, extending the longest winning streak at the FBS level to 15.
17. Michigan (1-1)
Week 2 Result: Defeated Western Michigan
Michigan’s offense shows signs of life in easy win over Western Michigan.
18. West Virginia (2-0)
Week 2 Result: Defeated Youngstown State
Mountaineers’ offense has averaged over eight yards a play in back-to-back games to open the 2018 season.
19. Miami (1-1)
Week 2 Result: Defeated Savannah State
Easy win over Savannah State helps coach Mark Richt’s team get back on track after its Week 1 loss to LSU. But most importantly, the Hurricanes have a new turnover chain for 2018.
20. Oregon (2-0)
Week 2 Result: Defeated Portland State
Ducks have one more tune up (San Jose State) before a huge matchup against Stanford on Sept. 22.
21. TCU (2-0)
Week 2 Result: Defeated SMU
Horned Frogs started slow on Friday night but eventually pulled away from SMU to retain Iron Skillet. Next up: Ohio State.
22. Texas A&M (1-1)
Week 2 Result: Lost to Clemson
Aggies impressive in loss to Clemson. Quarterback Kellen Mond might be the most-improved player in college football.
23. Arizona State (2-0)
Week 2 Result: Defeated Michigan State
The Herm Edwards era is off to a good start after upset win over Michigan State.
24. Colorado (2-0)
Week 2 Result: Defeated Nebraska
Buffaloes spoil Scott Frost’s first game in Lincoln. Quarterback Steven Montez and receiver Laviska Shenault are emerging as one of the Pac-12’s top pass-catch combinations.
25. USC (1-1)
