Ranking the top 25 teams in college football after Week 3

Weekly college football top 25 rankings are a big part of every season, and Athlon Sports will update its top 25 following the games each weekend. The third weekend of the 2018 season featured its share of big matchups, including Ohio State's victory over TCU, Washington's road win at Utah and LSU's last-second upset at Auburn. As expected, Alabama, Clemson and Georgia cruised to easy victories to remain the top three teams in this week's ranking. Boston College and Oklahoma State join the top 25 after big wins in Week 3. With the third week of the 2018 season officially in the books, here are the top 25 teams in college football:

 

College Football Top 25 Rankings (After Week 3)

 

1. Alabama (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated Ole Miss

 

Crimson Tide have scored at least 50 points in all three contests this year.

 

2. Clemson (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated Georgia Southern

 

Freshmen Trevor Lawrence (12 of 19 for 194 yards) and Justyn Ross (three catches for 103 yards) impress in 38-7 victory over Georgia Southern.

 

3. Georgia (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated MTSU

 

Quarterbacks Jake Fromm and Justin Fields combined for four passing scores in Saturday’s easy win over MTSU.

 

4. Ohio State (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated TCU

 

Buckeyes get two defensive touchdowns and a big performance from quarterback Dwayne Haskins to knock off TCU and end Ryan Day’s interim stint with a 3-0 record.

 

5. LSU (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated Auburn

 

Two transfer pickups – kicker Cole Tracy and quarterback Joe Burrow – were instrumental in LSU’s win at Auburn. Additionally, coach Ed Orgeron's standout defense forced two turnovers and did not allow a score on Auburn’s final five drives.

 

6. Oklahoma (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated Iowa State

 

Kyler Murray (21 of 29 for 348 yards and three scores) continued his hot start in a key road win at Iowa State.

 

7. Notre Dame (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated Vanderbilt

 

Fighting Irish once again live on the edge in close win over Vanderbilt.

 

8. Auburn (2-1)

Week 3 Result: Lost to LSU

 

Auburn comes up short in second half against LSU for the second year in a row.

 

9. Washington (2-1)

Week 3 Result: Defeated Utah

 

Defense leads the way for Huskies in road win at Utah, but the ground game also showed signs of life behind running back Myles Gaskin.

 

10. Penn State (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated Kent State

 

Penn State’s defense allowed only 2.9 yards per play in Saturday’s win over Kent State.

 

11. Virginia Tech (2-0)

Week 3 Result: No Game

 

Virginia Tech’s game against East Carolina was canceled due to Hurricane Florence.

 

12. Mississippi State (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated Louisiana

 

Nick Fitzgerald’s six touchdowns were more than enough to beat Louisiana on Saturday night.

 

13. Stanford (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated UC Davis

 

Matchup against UC Davis allows Stanford to rest running back Bryce Love for next week’s game at Oregon.

 

14. UCF (2-0)

Week 3 Result: No Game

 

UCF’s game against North Carolina was canceled due to Hurricane Florence. Knights take on FAU this Friday.

 

15. Michigan (2-1)

Week 3 Result: Defeated SMU

 

Quarterback Shea Patterson has passed for three touchdowns in back-to-back games. How much has the Michigan offense improved since the opener? We’ll gain some insight Week 4 against Nebraska.

 

16. West Virginia (2-0)

Week 3 Result: No Game

 

West Virginia’s matchup at NC State was canceled this week due to Hurricane Florence.

 

17. Oklahoma State (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated Boise State

 

Steady play from quarterback Taylor Cornelius and a relentless pass rush fuel win over Boise State.

 

18. Miami (2-1)

Week 3 Result: Defeated Toledo

 

Malik Rosier has been inconsistent this year, but the senior quarterback (five touchdowns) led the way for Miami’s win at Toledo.

 

19. Oregon (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated San Jose State

 

Ducks close out non-conference action with a win over San Jose State. The schedule gets tougher in Week 4 with a visit coming from Stanford.

 

20. Texas A&M (2-1)

Week 3 Result: Defeated ULM

 

Aggies rebound from close loss to Clemson with a 48-10 victory over ULM. Next up: A trip to Tuscaloosa to take on Alabama.

 

21. TCU (2-1)

Week 3 Result: Lost to Ohio State

 

Ohio State had too much firepower on offense and talent on defense for TCU on Saturday night. However, the Horned Frogs also hurt their upset bid with two turnovers that were converted into defensive touchdowns.

 

22. Wisconsin (2-1)

Week 3 Result: Lost to BYU

 

Badgers’ playoff hopes take a hit after surprising loss to BYU.

 

23. Colorado (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated New Hampshire

 

Buffaloes remain unbeaten thanks to 311 rushing yards in a 45-14 victory over New Hampshire.

 

24. Boston College (3-0)

Week 3 Result: Defeated Wake Forest

 

Eagles join the top 25 after important ACC victory over Wake Forest. With Purdue, Temple, NC State and Louisville up next, Boston College has a good shot to be 7-0 headed into an Oct. 26 matchup against Miami.

 

25. Boise State (2-1)

Week 3 Result: Lost to Oklahoma State

 

The Broncos lost the battle in the trenches at Oklahoma State. The offensive front gave up seven sacks, while the defense surrendered 178 yards to the Cowboys’ ground game.
