Ranking the top 25 teams in college football after Week 8

Weekly college football top 25 rankings are a big part of every season, and Athlon Sports will update its top 25 following the games each weekend. The eighth weekend of the 2018 season featured a couple of upsets to shake up the rankings, as Oregon lost at Washington State, and Ohio State was dominated by Purdue in West Lafayette. At the top, Alabama maintains the No. 1 ranking after beating Tennessee 58-21, while Clemson moves to No. 2 after handling NC State 41-7. Washington State, Stanford and Utah join the top 25 after big wins in Week 8. With the eighth week of the 2018 season officially in the books, here are the top 25 teams in college football:

1. Alabama (8-0)

Week 8 Result: Defeated Tennessee

 

Alabama scores 58 points (the most in the all-time series against Tennessee), as Nick Saban dominates another former assistant.

 

2. Clemson (7-0)

Week 8 Result: Defeated NC State

 

Battle of undefeated teams from the ACC turns into one-sided affair, as Clemson beats NC State 41-7.

 

3. Notre Dame (7-0)

Week 8 Result: Bye Week

 

The Fighting Irish were off in Week 8 and play a neutral site game versus Navy next Saturday. Four of Notre Dame’s final five games take place away from South Bend.

 

4. Michigan (7-1)

Week 8 Result: Defeated Michigan State

 

Michigan’s defense suffocated Michigan State’s offense in Saturday’s 21-7 win, limiting the Spartans to just 94 yards on 51 plays.

 

5. Florida (6-1)

Week 8 Result: Bye Week

 

The Gators were off in Week 8 and return to action next Saturday against Georgia in Jacksonville.

 

6. LSU (7-1)

Week 8 Result: Defeated Mississippi State

 

It wasn’t pretty, but LSU controlled Saturday night’s game to beat Mississippi State 19-3. A questionable targeting call on linebacker Devin White (and a first-half suspension for the next game) is a huge setback with Alabama up next.

 

7. Texas (6-1)

Week 8 Result: Bye Week

 

The health of quarterback Sam Ehlinger will be under the spotlight before Saturday’s game against Oklahoma State.

 

8. Georgia (6-1)

Week 8 Result: Bye Week

 

The Bulldogs were off in Week 8 and return to action next Saturday in Jacksonville against Florida.

 

9. Oklahoma (6-1)

Week 8 Result: Defeated TCU

 

Signs of progress on defense? Oklahoma allowed only three points in the second half of Saturday’s win over TCU.

 

10. Ohio State (7-1)

Week 8 Result: Lost to Purdue

 

Offensive line, running game and defensive issues all catch up to Ohio State in loss to Purdue.

 

11. UCF (7-0)

Week 8 Result: Defeated East Carolina

 

No McKenzie Milton? No problem for UCF on Saturday night in win over East Carolina.

 

12. Texas A&M (5-2)

Week 8 Result: Bye Week

 

The Aggies were off on Saturday and return to action next Saturday against Mississippi State.

 

13. Kentucky (6-1)

Week 8 Result: Defeated Vanderbilt

 

Wildcats had only 18 passing yards, but once again, Benny Snell and the defense come up big to secure the victory.

 

14. Iowa (6-1)

Week 8 Result: Defeated Maryland

 

Hawkeyes quietly lurking in the Big Ten West, but key road trips await against Penn State and Purdue up next.

 

15. Penn State (5-2)

Week 8 Result: Defeated Indiana

 

Hoosiers make it interesting late in the fourth quarter, but Nittany Lions hold on to rebound from last week’s loss to Michigan State.

 

16. Washington State (6-1)

Week 8 Result: Defeated Oregon

 

Cougars ride stingy first-half defense and quarterback Gardner Minshew to win over Oregon and a spot in the top 25.

 

17. Oregon (6-1)

Week 8 Result: Lost to Washington State

 

Loss to Washington State knocks Oregon out of driver’s seat for the Pac-12 North title, but it’s too early to count out Mario Cristobal’s team for the conference championship.

 

18. Washington (6-2)

Week 8 Result: Defeated Colorado

 

Clutch fourth-down touchdown pass from quarterback Jake Browning late in the fourth quarter seals victory for Huskies over Colorado.

 

19. Iowa State (3-3)

Week 8 Result: Bye Week

 

The Cyclones were off in Week 8 and return to action next Saturday versus Texas Tech.

 

20. West Virginia (5-1)

Week 8 Result: Bye Week

 

The Mountaineers were off in Week 8 and return to action on Thursday night against Baylor.

 

21. Wisconsin (5-2)

Week 8 Result: Defeated Illinois

 

Badgers rebound from loss to Michigan by gashing Fighting Illini for 357 rushing yards in 49-20 victory.

 

22. Texas Tech (5-2)

Week 8 Result: Defeated Kansas

 

Freshman quarterback Alan Bowman tossed 408 yards and three touchdowns in Texas Tech’s win over Kansas after missing one game due to a partially collapsed lung.

 

23. Utah (5-2)

Week 8 Result: Defeated USC

 

Tyler Huntley’s four touchdown passes, along with a standout defensive effort, propel Utah to a 41-28 victory over USC in Salt Lake City.

 

24. NC State (5-1)

Week 8 Result: Lost to Clemson

 

There’s a significant gap between Clemson and the rest of the ACC this season.

 

25. Stanford (5-2)

Week 8 Result: Defeated Arizona State

 

Cardinal were outgained 437 to 358 against Arizona State, but coach David Shaw’s team found a way to get the victory to stay alive in the North Division title race.
