Athlon hands out the awards from the Week 12 action

With the 12th weekend of the 2018 season in the books, it’s time to take a look at the best of the best and honor some of the top performances. Each week, Athlon Sports will highlight some of the top performers in college football with its weekly awards section. Here’s a look at Athlon Sports’ picks for the offensive, defensive, coordinator, team and freshman from Week 12:

 

College Football Week 12 Awards

 

Offensive Player of the Week: Jonathan Taylor, RB, Wisconsin

Taylor led the way for Wisconsin’s offense in Saturday’s overtime win at Purdue. The sophomore rushed for 321 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winning 17-yard score in the third overtime.

 

Defensive Player of the Week: Alohi Gilman, S, Notre Dame

Gilman helped to lead a strong defensive effort for Notre Dame in Saturday’s win over Syracuse. The safety collected eight tackles and picked off two passes, while helping to limit the Orange to just 115 yards through the air.

 

Coordinator of the Week (Offense): Mike Yurcich, Oklahoma State

Oklahoma State’s offense scored 31 points in the second half to upset West Virginia 45-41 on Saturday. Yurcich’s group accumulated 604 total yards (6.8 per play), went seven-for-seven in red zone trips and scored touchdowns on their final three drives. The Cowboys passed for 338 yards and ran for 266 against a West Virginia defense that entered Saturday’s game giving up just 20.9 points a game and 5.2 yards per play.

 

Coordinator of the Week (Defense): Todd Orlando, Texas

The Longhorns held Iowa State to 10 points and 210 total yards (3.6 a play) in Saturday’s 24-10 victory. Orlando’s group forced two turnovers, allowed only 62 yards on the ground and generated six tackles for a loss. Additionally, Texas limited the Cyclones to just five third-down conversions on 15 attempts and recorded three sacks.

 

Team of the Week: UCF

UCF was in the spotlight in Week 12 with College GameDay on campus and a Saturday night showcase game against Cincinnati. The Knights used that moment to deliver another statement victory, as coach Josh Heupel’s team clinched the American Athletic East Division title with a 38-13 victory over the Bearcats. Quarterback McKenzie Milton threw for 268 yards and three scores, while UCF’s defense allowed only one offensive touchdown and limited Cincinnati to 4.7 yards a play.

 

Freshman of the Week (Offense): Anthony McFarland, RB, Maryland

McFarland rushed for 298 yards (14.2 ypc) and two touchdowns in Maryland’s 52-51 loss to Ohio State.

 

Freshman of the Week (Defense): Wyatt Hubert, DE, Kansas State

Hubert recorded five tackles (two for a loss), two sacks and two forced fumbles in Kansas State’s win over Texas Tech.
