With Week 12 of the 2019 season in the books, it’s time to take a look at the best of the best and honor some of the top performances. Each week, Athlon Sports will highlight some of the top performers in college football with its weekly awards section. Here’s a look at Athlon Sports’ picks for the offensive, defensive, coordinator, team and freshman from Week 12:

College Football Week 12 Awards

Offensive Player of the Week: Jalen Hurts, QB, Oklahoma

Hurts threw for 297 yards and four touchdowns and added 114 rushing yards on 27 carries to help Oklahoma stage the biggest comeback in school history in a 34-31 win over Baylor.

Defensive Player of the Week: A.J. Epenesa, DL, Iowa

Epenesa recorded four tackles (2.5 for a loss), 2.5 sacks and one forced fumble in Iowa’s win over Minnesota.

Coordinator of the Week (Offense): Josh Gattis, Michigan

Michigan’s offense recorded 467 yards and 44 points in a huge rivalry win over Michigan State on Saturday. Gattis called an outstanding game for the Wolverines, as this unit averaged seven yards a play, scored all six times in the red zone and converted eight of 13 third-down attempts. Additionally, Michigan’s 384 passing yards were the most by the offense in 2019.

Coordinator of the Week (Defense): Clark Lea, Notre Dame

Notre Dame’s defense held Navy to just 281 rushing yards (4.4 a carry), with most of the damage coming in the second half of a 52-20 win. Lea’s group limited the Midshipmen to just five third-down conversions over 20 attempts, recorded eight tackles for a loss and forced four turnovers.

Team of the Week: Georgia

The Bulldogs added another big-time win to their resume by defeating Auburn 21-14 on Saturday. Quarterback Jake Fromm threw for 110 yards and three scores, while the ground attack generated 141 against one of the toughest defensive fronts in the nation. Georgia’s defense held Auburn to just 84 rushing yards, and most of the overall allowed yardage (329) came late in the second half. And when the Tigers tried to generate a late-scoring drive to tie the game, coach Kirby Smart’s defense stepped up on back-to-back drives and generated stops on fourth down.

Freshman of the Week (Offense): John Rhys Plumlee, QB, Ole Miss

Plumlee ran for 212 yards and four touchdowns and threw for 123 yards in Ole Miss’ 58-37 loss to LSU.

Freshman of the Week (Defense): Kayvon Thibodeaux, DL, Oregon

Thibodeaux recorded four tackles (three for a loss) and two sacks in Oregon’s win over Arizona.
