Athlon hands out the awards from the 12th week of action
With the 12th weekend of the 2020 season in the books, it’s time to take a look at the best of the best and honor some of the top performances. Each week, Athlon Sports will highlight some of the top performers in college football with its weekly awards section. Here’s a look at Athlon Sports’ picks for the offensive, defensive, coordinator, team, and freshman from Week 12:
College Football Week 12 Awards
Offensive Player of the Week: JT Daniels, QB, Georgia
Daniels shined in his first start with Georgia. The USC transfer connected on 28 of 38 throws for 401 yards and four scores to lift the Bulldogs to a 31-24 win over Mississippi State.
Defensive Player of the Week: Zaven Collins, LB, Tulsa
Collins continued his standout 2020 season with another big-time performance against Tulane. The senior recorded 15 tackles and sealed the overtime win for Tulsa with a 96-yard interception return on the final play.
Team of the Week: Coastal Carolina
The Chanticleers scored a huge win in their quest to win the Sun Belt East Division title on Saturday. Coach Jamey Chadwell’s team outscored Appalachian State 25-6 in the second half to record a 34-23 victory. The offense averaged 6.7 yards per snap behind quarterback Grayson McCall (269 total yards and three scores), while the defense stepped up with three forced turnovers in the final two quarters. Coastal Carolina is the first Sun Belt team to reach 8-0.
Coordinator of the Week (Offense): Tom Manning, Iowa State
Iowa State’s offense was on fire during Saturday’s win over Kansas State. The Cyclones averaged 7.8 yards per play en route to a 45-0 victory. The ground game posted 240 yards, while quarterback Brock Purdy led the offense to 299 yards through the air. Iowa State scored touchdowns on five of the team’s first six possessions and punted only twice in the game.
Coordinator of the Week (Defense): Mike Hankwitz, Northwestern
Northwestern’s defense led the way in the 17-7 win over Wisconsin. The Wildcats allowed only 366 yards (4.5 per play), allowed just three conversions on 16 third-down attempts, generated three sacks and five takeaways. Only one of Wisconsin’s offensive drives went beyond 43 yards, and Northwestern also stopped two possessions in Wildcat territory on fourth down.
Freshman of the Week (Offense): Spencer Rattler, QB, Oklahoma
Rattler threw for 301 yards and four touchdowns and added 14 yards and a score on the ground in Oklahoma’s 41-13 win over Oklahoma State.
Freshman of the Week (Defense): Brandon Joseph, S, Northwestern
Joseph registered seven tackles and intercepted two passes in Northwestern’s win over Wisconsin.
