College Football Week 14 Awards

Athlon hands out the awards from the Week 14 action.

Week 14 of the 2017 college football season was all about conference championships. And the action on the gridiron didn't disappoint in the final weekend before bowl season. Oklahoma, Clemson and Georgia secured convincing victories in their respective league title games, while USC and Ohio State closed out their titles in the fourth quarter. Additionally, UCF-Memphis was a high-scoring affair that went into overtime, and Boise State edged Fresno State for the Mountain West title.

With the 14th weekend of the 2017 season in the books, it’s time to take a look at the best of the best and honor some of the top performances. Here’s a look at Athlon Sports’ picks for the offensive, defensive, coordinator, team, freshman and unsung hero from Week 14:

College Football Week 14 Awards

Offensive Player of the Week: Kelly Bryant, QB, Clemson

Bryant completed his first 15 passes against a tough Miami defense in the ACC Championship and finished the game with 252 passing yards on 23 completions. He also added a touchdown pass and one score on the ground.

Defensive Player of the Week: Roquan Smith, LB, Georgia

Smith recorded 13 tackles (two for a loss), two quarterback hurries, one sack and recovered two fumbles in Georgia’s win over Auburn in the SEC Championship.

Coordinator of the Week (Offense): Jim Chaney, Georgia

Georgia’s offense recorded 421 yards (6.7 per play) in the 28-7 victory over Auburn. After a sluggish showing in the first meeting between these two teams, Chaney’s offense gashed the Tigers for 238 yards on the ground and only had one three-and-out drive.

Coordinator of the Week (Defense): Brent Venables, Clemson

Clemson’s defense turned in another dominant effort in Saturday’s game against Miami. The Tigers limited the Hurricanes to just 214 total yards and three points en route to winning their third ACC title in a row. This unit also recorded four sacks, six tackles for a loss and forced three turnovers.

Coach of the Week: Odell Haggins, Florida State

With Jimbo Fisher leaving Tallahassee for Texas A&M, Haggins was named as the team’s interim coach for the regular season finale against ULM. The long-time assistant guided the Seminoles to a 42-10 victory over the Warhawks, which ensured the Seminoles go to a bowl game in 2017.

Co-Freshman of the Week (Offense): J.K. Dobbins, RB, Ohio State

Dobbins rushed for 174 yards on 17 carries in Ohio State’s win over Wisconsin on Saturday night.

Co-Freshman of the Week (Offense): Jake Fromm, QB, Georgia

Fromm completed 16 of 22 passes for 183 yards and two touchdowns in the SEC Championship victory over Auburn.

Freshman of the Week (Defense): Curtis Weaver, DE/LB, Boise State

Weaver recorded four tackles (one for a loss), one sack and one pass breakup in Boise State’s win over Fresno State.

Team of the Week: UCF

The Knights completed a perfect 12-0 season with an overtime victory against Memphis in the American Athletic Conference title game.

Unsung Hero of the Week: Tyler Rogers, QB, New Mexico State

Thanks to a big performance from Rogers in Saturday’s game against South Alabama, the Aggies are going bowling for the first time since 1960. He completed 40 of 61 passes for 451 yards and two touchdowns (including a score with less than 30 seconds left) to seal the victory for New Mexico State.
